NASA Tours with Mr. Brewer

NASA has links to virtual tours of many of their research sites and air fields including astronaut training and pilot programs! As someone who was born in Houston, I took many visits to the Johnson Space Center and many of the centers in these tours.

I know there are some aspiring astronauts and pilots at Belmont Day. I can’t wait to hear what you think of these tours.

Storytime with Mr. Balkovetz: "If Picasso Painted a Snowman"

We’re all a little different in our own special ways. We like different things and activities and have different interests and experiences, so it makes sense that our drawings and art would be different too! I hope you enjoy reading this story with me, learning about famous artists, looking at all this cool snowman art, and perhaps starting some drawings of your own!

Workout Corner with Mr. Ridore

Jumping Jacks

Steps

Stand upright with your legs together, arms at your sides.

  1. Bend your knees slightly, and jump into the air.
  2. As you jump, spread your legs to be about shoulder-width apart. Stretch your arms out and over your head.
  3. Jump back to starting position.
  4. Repeat.

Leg Raises

Steps

  1. Lie on your back, legs straight and together.
  2. Keep your legs straight and lift them all the way up to the ceiling until your bottom comes off the floor.
  3. Slowly lower your legs back down till they’re just above the floor. Hold for a moment.
  4. Raise your legs back up.
  5. Repeat.

Lunges

  1. Stand tall with feet hip-width apart. Engage your core
  2. Take a big step forward with your right leg. Start to shift your weight forward so the heel hits the floor first.
  3. Lower your body until the right thigh is parallel to the floor and the right shin is vertical. It’s OK if the knee shifts forward a little as long as it doesn’t go past the right toe. If mobility allows, lightly tap the left knee to the floor while keeping weight in the right heel.
  4. Press into the right heel to drive back up to the starting position.
  5. Repeat on the other side.

Mr. Alford’s I Spy Game

Ages: 4+ | Players: 2+

I Spy is a guessing game that helps children identify objects, describe objects, and expand their vocabulary. The game does not require many materials and can be made more difficult if players are guessing the right objects with ease.

Materials

  • Objects in a shared space (required)
  • A writing utensil and paper to keep track of selected objects and score (optional)

Rules

  1. All players should gather in the same space where they can sit or stand. Suitable spaces include living rooms, kitchens, and dining rooms.
  2. One player has to volunteer to be the spy. If more than one player or no one wants to be the spy, play “rocks paper scissors” to decide the spy.
  3. The spy has 20 seconds to look around the space and pick an object without saying the object or making prolonged eye contact with it. All players have to be able to see the object. Give the spy additional time to silently pick an object if necessary, especially in later rounds.
  4. The spy has to give a clue. For instance, they can say “I spy something that is gray” without making eye contact with the gray object they chose.
  5. Let every player take one guess each. If they are wrong, the next player gets to guess. The player who guesses correctly becomes the spy. If no one guesses the right object after three rounds, give another clue.
  6. If the players are guessing the correct objects with ease, the spy should try to pick a less obvious object that everyone can see. For instance, silently pick a pencil on the living room table as your object for other players to guess.
  7. Keep track of selected objects and/or the score on a sheet of paper if you would like to.

Mr. Balkovetz’s Sourdough Pretzels & Sourdough Starter Update

At about a week old, my sourdough starter is nice and bubbly so you can tell it’s ready to use. So yesterday I made some sourdough pretzels and they turned out AMAZING! I’m sharing the recipe for anyone who wants to try at home. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar, divided
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 1/2 cup sourdough starter
  • 3-4 cups flour (I use unbleached, all-purpose)
  • 1 Tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • Sea/Kosher Salt for sprinkling

Directions

  1. Melt and dissolve butter and sugar with hot water in a mixing bowl.
  2. When the butter and sugar are dissolved, add your sourdough starter.
  3. Gradually mix in 3-4 cups of flour.
  4. Turn out onto a well floured surface.
  5. Knead in the flour and continue adding flour until you have a firm ball of dough.
  6. Put the bowl in a warm place and allow it to rise for 2 hours.
  7. After the dough has risen, preheat the oven to 450°F.
  8. Punch the dough down and turn it back out onto a floured surface.
  9. Knead a few times, and roll out into a log.
  10. Cut into 16 equal pieces.
  11. Roll each piece out (“like playdough snakes”) and tie into a pretzel shape.
  12. Boil a pot of water and add remaining sugar and baking soda.
  13. Poach each pretzel for about 1 minute. I was able to fit 3-4 in the pot at a time.
  14. Remove from the water to a wire rack to drain.
  15. Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with salt.
  16. Bake for 15 minutes.
