Play Alphabet Bingo

Materials

  • 8.5 in. x 11 in. sheets of paper
  • a ruler
  • writing utensils
  • coloring materials
  • scissors

Age Range: 4+ years-old | Players: 2+

Objective: Mark the letters on your bingo board with chips if they are called. The first person to mark five boxes across, diagonally, or down wins.

Steps

  • Using a ruler, make your own bingo boards with 25 boxes (5 rows with 5 boxes each). The center box should be a free space where you can draw a star or write “free.”
  • Write down one letter in each box in a random order. The same letter cannot be used more than once.
  • Once you make one bingo board, make more bingo boards. All boards will have boxes with one letter for each box except for the free space. Make sure the order of the letters on all boards are different.
  • Make your own chips if you do not have them. You can cut out small pieces of paper. Put a chip on the free space of each board.
  • Take a sheet of paper and cut it into small squares. Be sure the squares are big enough so you can write a letter on each.
  • Once you have 26 squares, shuffle the squares face-down and pick them randomly to announce them. Put each square you pick up and call in a pile to the side.
  • The winner will have chips on five squares in a line, either across, down, or diagonal.

How To Set Up a Home Drive-In Movie Theater with Mr. Alford

Materials

  • Boxes that children can fit into (ideally cardboard boxes, wooden boxes or laundry baskets
  • paper plates
  • paper
  • scissors
  • tape
  • glue
  • a television
  • coloring materials
  • snacks

Age Range: 4 +. Children older than 10 years-old may have trouble finding boxes or baskets they can fit into. However, older children and adults can help with designing the “cars” and preparing food.

Steps

  • Find suitable boxes that a young child can fit in. They must be able to sit inside the box or basket. Ask them to sit in the box or basket first to make sure they can be comfortable sitting in it.
  • Then design the outside and inside parts of your “car.” It does not have to be too detailed but it should have some of the basic features of a car.
  • Put wheels on your “car.” You can make wheels by coloring paper plates black or by using black plastic plates. Attach the wheels to both sides of the “car” using tape or glue. Also add a steering wheel to the inside.
  • Design your front and back “lights.” There are two front lights and two back lights.
  • Add a “fuel tank” and a “license plate.” The fuel tank is on one side of a car and is usually directly above one of the back wheels. The license plate goes on the front of the car and the back of the car. Your “license plates” should be identical.
  • Pick a movie to watch together.
  • Prepare and distribute small snacks. Eat the snacks while you are in your “car.”
  • Watch the movie together and clean up the boxes and baskets after the movie ends.
