Day 2 Schedule

As puberty begins, signs and symptoms of depression become more visible in youth. This PD focuses on recognizing the signs and symptoms of depression in youth and spotting when behaviors become dangerous. We will discuss how to form connections with a student who is experiencing an isolating condition.

This is a workshop where we will use exercises in abstract expressionism as well as Neurographica to embrace imperfection in our artwork. This lesson, based on the picture book "Niko Draws A Feeling" by Bob Raczka, is a great illustrator-equalizer for artists of all ages and abilities. Enjoy getting in touch with your feelings and have some fun getting messy!

What if we used icebreakers to ACTUALLY get to know each other? What if they gave us information about each other and the work we do that we could make use of on a day-to-day basis? What if we used them to reflect on ourselves and how we work? In this workshop, come learn icebreakers that ACTUALLY bring teams together and improve our work.

Join us to make something! In this workshop, we'll talk about choice-based curriclulum, the benefits, and the differences between a choice-based philosophy and more traditional teaching approaches. Once we've had a chance to introduce our philosophy, we'll give the group a chance to participate in our mini-makerspace.

Troublemakers: Lessons in Freedom from Young Children at School by Carla Shalaby is a book that reframes "problem children" in early elementary school, arguing that their "misbehavior" reveals flaws in the educational system, not the children themselves. Come hear from a panel of BASEC teachers, who read this book this year as a book club, and the lessons and reflections they took away from the stories of Zora, Lucas, Sean, and Marcus, and how they've pondered about similar children in their programs and what to do to support them.

One of the biggest responsibilities educators have --especially those who work in Out-of-School Time-- is supporting the social-emotional development and health of its students. In this workshop, learn how BASEC uses the practices of the Nurtured Heart Approach to build children's "inner wealth." And since "every child deserves a champion," you'll also learn how BASEC uses the strategies of Relationship Mapping to work towards this goal. Come learn how "relationship" is the strongest and most important tool in our toolbox.
