Kia ora Room 17!!
I hope you and your whΔnau are well and enjoying this time to be together. I was really looking forward to being back in the classroom with you all after my time away however I'm equally as excited to start this exciting new challenge we have ahead of us. We've been here before and you guys were super stars and you'll be super stars again.
I know online learning will present different problems for each of us, so please just do your best and support each other as much as possible.
To the right is a link to our Google Meet video calls that we will have every weekday. One at 9am and then another one at 2pm. These calls will allow us to learn what is needed for the day and answer any questions. In the afternoon, we will share our learning and celebrate one another's successes.
I will try to make this as fun and engaging as I can :)

Through all of lockdown there will be some expectations outlined below. Make sure you are doing what you need to get done.
We will be meeting on Google Meet every morning and afternoon at 9am and 2pm.
ONLY do school work during normal school hours. This means 9-11am, 11:30-1pm and 1:40 - 3pm. Use the rest of your time for yourself. If you can not do anything during these times because you are helping your whΔnau/bubble that is ok.
Complete the work in which ever way works for YOU. If this means digitally, on paper or however make a decision on what format will help you best complete the learning.
Don't struggle alone!!! If you are finding it hard to concentrate, can't keep on task or don't understand what to do, please ask for help.
Store and submit all completed learning in your Google Drive and turn in work on Google Classroom. Make sure you turn in your work under the correct tabs.
When learning and interacting online there are some basic manners and etiquette to use. These are outlined below
Listen & be present during video chats.
Mute yourself unless you need to talk.
One person talking at a time - don't interrupt.
Chat is for questions related to the topic, not your own personal chat channel.
Language is to be school appropriate.
Select clothing and a location suitable for speaking to others.
On this website! All of your learning is down below. Please complete each activity with the day of the week and upload to your Google folder and turn it into Google Classroom.
Homework and production information can be found by clicking the tabs at the top of the website.
Have a go at everything and try your best!
Please create a folder on your school Google Drive named "Online Learning 2021". Within this folder, you can make subfolders of "Reading", "Writing", "Maths", "Art", STEM and "PE". Once you have done this, please share your "Online Learning 2021" folder with me, so I can see all of the amazing work you are uploading. I would also appreciate if you turn your work in on Google Classroom under the appropriate Topics (Reading, Writing, Maths, Art, STEM and PE).
Once you have turned your work in I can see that it's ready for some feedback.
Learning from home can be a challenge. There a some simple things you can do to make it better for yourself, which are listed below
Have a dedicated learning space. Think of this as your desk, do your work from here each day and pack it up each day at 3pm.
Set Alarms. Use your phone or device to create a normal school routine for yourself. The closed to a normal school day you can keep it the better it will be for you once normal school resumes.
Take a break! For every 45mins staring at a screen you need a 15 minute break. Go talk to your family, play with a pet, read a book or do some exercise.
Don't stress. If something is too hard or you don't understand it thats normal, it happens to everyone. Can't concentrate? Not feeling up to online learning today? Make sure you let me know, if I don't know, I can't help!
Have fun. This is hard time for all of us so the best thing to do is smile and enjoy it. Put on some of your favourite music when independently learning, do a just dance for a break, wear a funny hat or mask to our meetings. The more we can put a smile on our faces the easier this will be!
If you have any questions about what you need to do or don't understand you can:
Email me at rick.mackay@bellblock.school.nz
Ask a question on our Google Classroom home page. By asking a question here someone else in our class might be able to help you or you they might be thinking the same question as you.
Please don't stress about any work and ask questions. We all have different talents in Room 17 and can help each other out.
Complete at least 25 minutes of Reading. If you don't have any books at home, please use the links below for reading material.

The Lighthouse , a short animated film about an old lighthouse keeper and his community coming to help him at a time of need.
TALK.
Has there been a time when you wanted to be away from other people? Why did you feel like that? Why do people want to be alone? Are they happy? Explain why or why not.Thyme. (Because these are the best to grow).
DO.
Write a backstory for the Light Keeper. Write a backstory in his past to make him dislike being around people. Why does he live alone in the lighthouse and how does he feel.
Select on of the Measurement links below. Please make sure you pick a booklet that is challenging for you. This should not be too easy or too hard. Start from worksheet 1 and work through it at your own pace. You can answer the questions using pencil and paper or online. It's up to you. If you have any questions about something please ask.
This is a game for two players. You will need a sheet of grid paper (or rule lines down a sheet of writing paper).
The game is played like the ordinary game of noughts and crosses, with each player taking turns to mark a square with a nought or a cross.
It does not end with first string of three noughts or crosses. Keep going until either the grid is full or both players have had enough!
The winner is the player who has the most strings-of-three. You might find it helpful to use different colour pens or to keep score as you play.
Playing on such a large grid means that the game is very unlikely to end in a draw and there is plenty of time to think about strategies for winning.
Once you have mastered strings-of-three, try a game with strings-of-four, then strings-of-five, maybe even strings-of-six!
Click on the link and watch the video. Follow the instructions. You can stop watching the video at 5mins 40secs.
I look forward to seeing the art you create from it.
Have fun and get creative.
MEASUREMENT
TASK: You are an Olympic Long Jump athlete and you are required to set up an area to practice at home. You will need to create a take off board or line. This is where you will jump from. Create a competition with your bubble and help measure each others distances.
Record your three best jumps.
How far off the female and male Olympic Record is your best jump? Who holds the Olympic Records and what country are they from?
How far off the female and male World Record is your best jump? Who holds the World Records and what country are they from?
What is the total distance you jumped when you add your three scores together?
Please remember to keep it safe as we probably don't have Long Jump pits at home!
Let the games begin!
It's important to make sure you are moving around and exercising every day. Some great ways of doing this are below. Check out the links to the Quarantine Games and Les Mills Born to Move Kids Workouts.
