Evidence comes in many forms. While words in the form of text and quotes seem to be the more common forms of evidence, statistics in the form of graphs and charts, geographic information in the form of maps and images in the form of pictures and photographs, are also important forms of evidence. However, different from words (where the message of the evidence is self-evident), it takes more effort to recognize and understand the information contained in these forms of evidence. This activity is about how to recognize the information in visual evidence and how the information in this type of evidence can be put together to support a statement.
Three points to keep in mind when working with visual evidence:
First - Note important specific information in answering questions and for evidence in the chart. Details such as number, locations and connections are important. Noting these details helps with thinking and builds good habits of work.
Second - Look for common reference points between types of visual evidence, such as specific locations or common dates, that are significant to the point of focus. These common reference points can be used to connect evidence to better support the point of focus.
Third - Evidence is factual information and the different pieces of evidence may not seem to have a clear connection - you need to use reasoning and ideas from homework and earlier assignments to connect the evidence in a way that supports the statement.
