Organizing Your Day

Created by Worcester Public Schools and adapted by Bedford Public Schools

Big Idea: Work together as a family to agree on a schedule that works for everyone.

Ideas to Help with the
Planning Process:

  • Explore sample schedules to get ideas (try using google to search key words like family schedules or daily routines)

  • Start with the timing of important daily milestones including meals, snack, chores, responsibilities, wake up and bed times, etc

  • Discuss priorities such as school time, exercise, time outdoors, communicating with friends/family online or by phone, screen time vs screen-free time, etc.

  • Think about what works for your child when it comes to how the normal school day is organized. This can be a guide for your day at home.

  • Decide when your family will stick to the schedule and when it will be more relaxed (weekdays vs weekends)

  • Students may be able to design their own schedules and propose it their families; discussing feedback and making revisions is a great skill to practice.

Ideas for Documenting
the Plan and Tracking How it Goes (these are options as this is very unique for each family)

  • Create a daily schedule:

    • Use the printable template below (you can open the googledoc in a new window and then print); or

    • Draw out your schedule with pictures representing what you will be doing each part of the day

  • Post a schedule on the refrigerator and use a magnet to track which part the children are on

  • Create a journal to record what you are doing each day and include your schedule on the cover or first page

  • Create a playlist of songs for transitioning between activities

  • Record a video of the schedule in action to share with friends and family

  • Write your teacher or principal an email explaining your plan
