Unit 5: IMFs and Solutions

Unit Objectives:

At the completion of this unit, students will be able to

1. Predict, using the shape of a molecule and the polarity of bonds in a molecule, the type of intermolecular forces (hydrogen, dipole-dipole, London dispersion forces) for a given compound.

2. Make predictions about physical properties based on strength of intermolecular forces.

3. Determine if a solute will be able to dissolve in a particular solvent and justify why.

4. Describe different factors that affect the rate of dissolution and explain why it is so.

5. Identify electrolytes and non-electrolytes and explain why they are classified as so.
