Unit 11 -KET

Unit Objectives

At the completion of this unit, students will be able to

1. Describe enthalpy and entropy (and explain how they are used to drive a reaction for Levels 4 & 5).

2. Calculate Gibbs’ free energy and use the value to determine if a reaction is spontaneous or nonspontaneous.

3. Interpret a potential energy diagram.

4. Differentiate between endothermic and exothermic reactions

5. Explain how various factors (temperature, agitation, concentration, surface area, and catalysts) affect the rate of a chemical reaction as well as the manner in which this occurs.

6. Explain LeChatelier’s principle and predict what will happen to the concentrations of all components in the chemical reaction.

7. Identify the factors that can cause a shift in equilibrium (concentration, pressure, volume, temperature, common ion).

8. Calculate the Keq for a chemical reaction and use it to predict whether the reaction favors the reactants or the products.

9. Predict if the Keq increases, decreases, or remains the same once the shift in equilibrium has been reestablished.
