Unit 1: Matter and Energy

Unit Objectives:

At the Completion of this unit students will be able to

1. Explain the difference between mixtures and pure substances

2. Compare elements, compounds, & mixtures on the macro- and microscopic levels.

3. Identify the seven (7) diatomic elements.

4. Differentiate between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.

5. Describe, identify, and differentiate between the four states of matter (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) in terms of energy, particle motion, and phase transitions.

6. Use physical and chemical properties to classify and describe matter.

7. Perform calculations related to density and use density to predict behavior of solids and liquids when immersed in water or other mediums.

8. Identify and distinguish between chemical, physical, and nuclear changes.

9. List the 4 indications that a chemical reaction (change) has taken place.
