As prefects we carry out duties around the house; however, we are also here to help you. If you are new, we will give your tours of the house, explain it all and help you settle in, but throughout the year we will always be able to chat with you. So don't be shy.

The Dorter prefects award is given by us prefects to girls who have really taken a lead in the house, without being necessarily asked to do so. Students, especially in the lower school, who take the initiative, guide others by setting a good example, look out for others, are mature. Up and coming prefects, in other words. The prestigious award is handed out to up to two girls twice a term.
Our House council is entirely student-driven, led by us prefects but involving girls from all year groups. Dorter values your opinion! We do encourage you to make your yourselves heard, challenge old wisdoms, be engaged in shaping the house and the school! The house council is the place for constructive criticism, new ideas, questions, suggestions and proposals. Share your ideas with us! The house councils represent the views of all students in Dorter in weekly house council meetings. We will feedback your views to Dr Lewis and Miss Jackson. The house councils ensures that the voice of every student in every year group is heard. Beyond the Dorter house council, the four school council sub-committees focus on academic, pastoral, co-curricular and social issues - this is where your ideas for school wide improvements are taken.
Stage 1
If a pupil has a worry or complaint, in most cases they will be able to communicate that informally to an adult who knows them. Any pupil having a grievance can approach any of the members of staff within their House or indeed the School (their Housemistress / mistress, tutor or matron would normally be the person best placed to deal with the matter in the first instance). If a pupil feels that their problem has not been properly addressed or sorted out the following procedure is laid down whereby they can make a more formal complaint. A pupil will not be penalized for making a formal complaint in good faith.
Stage 2
If any pupil feels the need to make a formal complaint about a matter which is causing distress or a problem which cannot be otherwise resolved he or she should inform the Head of Boarding; the Senior Housemistress Day; the Chaplain; or a Deputy Head, either verbally or in writing. The complaint will be acknowledged within two days and a written record will be made of the complaint.
Stage 3
The complaint will be investigated by a mutually agreed, independent person, sanctioned by the Headmaster, and resolved either to the pupil’s satisfaction or with an otherwise appropriate outcome, which balances the rights and duties of those involved. The investigation will normally be completed within two weeks. The complainant will be informed of the outcome in writing.
Stage 4
If the pupil, or his / her parents or carers, feel that the procedure detailed above has not dealt with the complaint satisfactorily then a letter setting out the unresolved complaint should be sent to the Headmaster. The School will then follow the Bede’s Complaints Policy, which is available on the website.
