Ukraine is still fighting, more than 100 days into the "3-day special military operation". However, Ukrainians are not fighting this war just for themselves, for their freedom and their right of self determination. They are fighting this war for us, our Western values, for democracy. It must not go off our radar. Everybody can do their bit. Our Ukrainian girls from Dorter and Crossways have been making blue and yellow ribbons which they have been selling outside the staffroom and by speaking in every house assembly in the school. The money goes towards supporting the Ukrainian military. It is a charity, but then again a charity Ukrainian people should never have to say thank you for. Reasons stated above. Slava Ukraini!
Over the last few weeks (while Mia was training for her triathlon) it has become a nice little tradition to join her and Mr Rohmer for a Tuesday or Thursday evening run around the MPH and Cricket Pavilion: one lap equals exactly one km, so you can go as many times as you can handle, setting yourself PB targets or expand the distance. We are going to keep it up!
Huge congratulations to our new Head of House, Lianah, and our new Deputy Head of House, Edie! Congratulations also to you two and Deborah for becoming School Prefects!
It has been a very exhausting few weeks, especially in academic terms. Mock exams for many of us - and now on to real thing! Our dramatists performed their exam pieces, our dancers were in several shows, there were field and theatre trips (not complaining), sports, concerts, house comps, enrichment events, ted talks and tons of revision. A lot of it was impacted by no or sketchy Wi-Fi (complaining). Thank you to Miss Jackson and the team of matrons and tutors for helping us steer through this. On Thursday it was finally our turn to plant a tree each, a great school initiative for the environment. We had also put in some netball training and did play relatively well in the Senior Tournament (giving Xways a close game) but overall it was not enough for a win against any of the other girls' houses. We tried. Things keep changing in the big and smaller scheme of things. Embrace! For example, we shall campaign for a dance element in the next house competitions, it's our special strength. It's only fair.
The Thursday before the Easter holidays marked our last ever prefect shift (Zara's turn to put the house to bed and lights out). Before that we - the prefect team - went together to the Plough for a huge meal (steak burgers for most plus pudding richness and a couple of drinks). We reminisced about the entire prefect experience, funny moments, biggest challenges and so on, lots of general life anecdotes, too. Miss Jackson, Mrs Morton-Freeman and Mr Rohmer were there with us, thank you so much for the invite! Miss Jackson said that it was now time to fully concentrate on our exams and to let the others step up. We shall of course continue to be there for the younger years and the new prefect team ... as the senior girls in the house: moral support, leading by example and so on.
We are truly lucky in that the Drama Studio is basically part of Dorter, sound and lights. We have had plenty of cinema nights there, sing-alongs and karaoke parties galore. Such as this one. Great fun.
Cross Country was quite challenging, 3 miles across the cow fields (no cows), over turn-stiles, through hedges and ditches. Also, we haven't had that sort of competition for a couple of years due to various March lock downs, so most Dorter girls did not really know beforehand what it involved. Most everybody took part though, some walking to music, some running it. It was all about participation, every finish counted for house points. Now: Maddy won the senior girls category! Absolutely Amazing!. Mia came 5th in the junior girls race and Sany was 7th at senior level. That's three top 10 finishes. Well done!

The Legat Solo Awards were a great chance to showcase the Dorter girls' talents. The categories were Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Contemporary and dancers from all houses took part. In order to qualify for the finals each performer had to submit a video which was adjudicated by professionals in each field from The Royal Ballet, Performers College and Tring. Therefore the competition was fierce. Unfortunately, the tap dance could not be performed live as it would have wrecked the floor, so this was recorded prior to the show and shown on screen. Zara won the overall jazz award. So well deserved! All the other Dorter girls impressed with their solos too, namely Chloe, Frankie, Olivia, Heather, Hannah and Anna. Franzi, Annika, Mila and Clara shone in the group performances.
All week long donations kept coming in for the second truck going to Ukraine via Poland. We are so grateful to all the parents, staff, students who donated toiletries, clothes, blankets, torches, iso mattresses, baby nappies, bottles, formula milk, gloves, batteries and over the counter medications. A special thanks to all NHS mums and dads who organised medications, bandages and sterile medical equipment which one cannot easily get. The Bede's community truly came together. On the second Thursday us Dorter girls got so much help from teachers and students from other houses that the huge job of sorting and repackaging all the things could be carried out efficiently and swiftly. Help was really needed and highly appreciated. The second van was again loaded up to the roof. Meanwhile the online donations for the UNHCR Ukraine appeal had reached a staggering twelve and a half thousand pounds. Thank you to everyone who contributed!
It is now important to understand that this is not all. The war is still raging on and we do not know when it will end, or which direction it will take next. Even if a cease fire is being negotiated there will still be a huge need for aid and support of the Ukrainian families, millions of displaced people. There are more actions to come initiated by us - the Dorter family. Watch this space!
Ten of our Dorter Legat girls performed in a public show - representing Bede's for 'Let's Dance' at The Congress Theatre, Eastbourne. We are especially proud of Zara, who has been offered a place at The Brighton Academy and Olivia who has been offered a place at Trinity Laban.
Today Dorter girls and Cambo boys sorted the donations, which had been pouring in over the last three days for Giogio's initiative, and loaded the first truck bound for the Polish-Ukrainian border. Thanks a lot also to the grounds/maintenance team who kept driving the bags form the chaplaincy (and the chapel!) to the new collection point at the bottom of the car park, as the chaplaincy was quickly running out of space. Emails from parents kept coming in all week long: i.e. one Bede's mother told that she had wanted to buy hygiene products and over the counter meds worth over £100 and the supermarket put it all on the house, as soon as she had said at the check out what it was for. A lot of support in the community.
The Just Giving page has already raised twice the target sum after only three days!
Matron made delicious pancakes. When we stepped into the kitchen it was smoking and you could hardly breathe because Matron had four (!) pans on the go at the same time and after the first 4 pancakes were done 10 girls came rushing down the stairs because of the lovely smell. There were selections of chocolate spread, chocolate sauce, ice cream and cream to put in your pancakes and some girls were creative with what they put in. Mia
Amazing performance, Anoushka and Alice! Watch in full!
So good to see you.
We miss you!
All the best wishes from the entire Dorter family, Dr Lewis!
The Valentines evening was organised by Edie and Alana. The idea was to make Valentines cards for friends. There was a coloring in activity and a card making station using templates and stickers. Mia put on some Amy Winehouse tunes, so it was a really nice calm retro stay-in evening. On the other side of the block, however, in the drama studio the seniors were having their singalong evening and got really wild. You could hear the noise when you took one step outside the house plus there were complaints from Cambo boys. Bothered! Pay back for all the deodorant fire alarms at most inconvenient hours. We had a glass of red or white wine, put some throw back bangers on and danced and sung the night away in a mosh pit.
The house competitions this time around had some new disciplines such as chess, engineering and tough mudder (an obstacle course). There were quizzes (junior, senior and music), baking, darts, ceramics and drama, as well as girls' senior football, junior netball and senior badminton. We were turning out in black for the first time, rocking our Dorter hoodies.
Georgie and Francesca won the badminton. In the football we were the underdogs but gave the star studded Xways squad a close game by truly playing as a team. Needless to say we all gave our best. Awaiting overall results.
Little surprise for Anna F. who has been accepted into Performers College. We are proud of you, even if this means you won't be here next year. There was a little slide show of the various stages of Anna's dancing career put together by Lydia and Summer. We wish you all the best for this important next step!
Even though the junior netball was tough we played well and managed to stay as a team and push through. We had Miss Jackson cheering us on which helped and she gave us tips on what to improve on in each match. Even though we didn't get into the final we are still happy with the performance. Now we have to wake up at 6am for netball practice everyday as Miss Jackson won't have it otherwise. Mia
It's been a year since the chocolate fountain last came out of the cupboard. Great team effort with cutting all the fruit and melting all the chocolate: dark, milk and white. To write a hundred words about the event would take longer than it took for all the chocolate to be eaten up. More! Please ...
As Sixth Form students of Mandarin, Edie and Deborah helped Miss Yan make dumplings on the occasion of the Chinese New Year, (we're now in the year of the TIGER, as Katie told us in roll call). This was a whole school event and the dumplings came out really delicious. There were all sorts of fillings: mushroom-vegetarian, pork, chicken and beef. A great idea, which proved very popular, a queue formed outside the food tech rooms at lunch time and the dumplings were gone in a whizz. We are now hoping that Deborah and Edie will make use of their newly acquired skills in Dorter, when we do the next international evening.
Trini, Maya and Anoushka on stage. Diana, Anna and Liyana in the pre-show programme. We are proud of you all. What an amazing show this was! Maya as Pugsley and Trini as Alice, their acting was so good, versatile and entertaining, and their singing voices, just wow! Anoushka as one of the ancestors danced beautifully. We all went together as a house to see the second performance on Thursday night, at the Devonshire Park Theatre, something that had not been possible in the last two years. The costumes were something to behold. All in all, a great night out!
At our pamper evening we had several stations set up, i.e. head massage and Anna F. and Lydia did the curling & straightening hair. Tonia and Albina were doing our nails and Alana braided Miss Jackson's hair. Edie and Ella ran the face masks station. Matron T was serving us delicious apple crumble. Relaaaaaax.
As a Wednesday night activity we did a Tik Tok masked dancer competition. It involved recording a 30 second video of room mates dancing without showing our faces or any of our hair or skin. We had to be quite inventive. We then added a Tik-Tok voiceover feature (based on 3 random questions) with effect so nobody could tell that it was us. It was great fun. Hannah, Mia and Nora won with their idea of teachers faces cobbled off the school data base.
Our house outing this year was a trip to Brighton. Some people had never been (!). After a slightly nauseating bus ride with steamed up windows and the heating on full blast, we were glad to finally catch a breath of fresh air outside the Royal Pavilion, which we quickly bypassed on our way to shopping in the Lanes and Churchill Square. Ice skating was strictly forbidden, so some of us watched the boys from Dorms to assess their skating skills (oh well). We then had a full two and half hours of buying Christmas presents (mainly for ourselves). The good thing about the Lanes is that they are mostly independent shops so the things we bought you can't get anywhere else. Then we went to Pinocchio, an upmarket Pizzeria, which Dr Lewis had chosen for us. Some of us had Sandwiches or Bratwurst before, which wasn't such a clever idea, as even the starters were large and after pizza or pasta it was not surprising that not everyone could finish their desert. It was also Francesca's birthday and the waitress brought out a sparkling cake with everyone singing for Francesca. As there was no Christmas trip last year, for most of us this was a first.
Virginia Woolf
Like last year the Dorter Christmas Party was in our house which is much more festive than the MPH, especially as this year we had adopted the Hawaiian Christmas theme, so it was all warm, bright and vibrant, a well hidden speaker playing paradise bird song and ocean waves from behind the needling tree adding to the tropical atmosphere. The food was the usual Christmas turkey dinner with stuffing and sprouts, and we had some nice bruschetta starters with sun dried tomatoes and squash. The vibes were great, of course, singing, quizzes, awards and secret Santa gifts. All this and the disco at the end really made the Christmas party a memorable event!
Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day
That's the island greeting that we send to you
From the land where palm trees sway
Here we know that Christmas
Will be green and bright
The sun to shine by day
And all the stars at night
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way
To say Merry Christmas to you ...
Wednesday's game night included the Dorter tucker trials, which consisted of three games in which we could win tuck shop sweets by completing challenges from fishing coins from a bowl of peaches with your mouth to a blindfolded pillow mace. Then it was Mila's, Lulu's, Amanda's and Jimena's birthdays, so lots of singing and celebrating. On the night of the 5th to the 6th of December we put our shoes out and according to the Nikolaus tradition, everyone who's been good all year round found sweets in them in the morning, which was basically all of us. Liyana and Diana impressed in their self-devised, expressionist GCSE piece on nascent individualism in a totalitarian, fully synchronised society.
For our Dorter house charity week we came up with different events to be able to raise money for our chosen charity Duchenne. The events that took place were selling pizzas which was very successful and we ended up selling all the slices in the first break. Our second event was a charity clothes sale where all Dorter girls gave up some of their unwanted clothes which we sold and this was also very successful. The third event was our cake sale where our matron baked us some delicious cakes for us to be able to sell to the whole school at break time. Our last event was our yearly burger and bingo night which had students from other houses coming together on a Friday night to play a game of bingo. There were amazing prizes to be won varying from a box of sweets to £10. Overall we raised an amazing £309 which is now going to go towards our charity to be able to help them find a cure for those young boys and girls suffering with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Lianah
The open mic night provided us all with a break and much needed distraction from all the academic business and other everyday life hassle. We were all hysterical and laughing including Miss Jackson and Matron D. It also helped people break out of the shells they had recently withdrawn into. A great counterpoint! This sort of event makes us come together as a community across all year groups in Dorter. Songs featured High School Musical, Abba and some completely random songs, One Direction too. Anyway, great fun. More soon please.
On Wednesday we celebrated the birthdays of Alice M and Holly with milk shakes in the village shop. Diana had Sushi in the evening with her friends and she and Ella had cake! On Thursday Amie came back to visit. Lovely to see her and hear how she's getting on at uni.
On 15 November 2021, our house, Dorter, had it’s formal dinner. Everyone in house looked absolutely stunning in their golden 20s themed dresses. I was totally amazed and fascinated by the evening, the harmonious singing in the chapel and the captivating speeches by Mr.Rohmer, Evita and Dr. Lewis. Everyone chatted at length and I had a very enjoyable time with the people around me. Furthermore, it was incredibly nice to spend the evening with everyone. We all came together as one big family and enjoyed the formal dinner. What a great experience!! Leni
That was such a great opportunity to come all together for the Formal Dinner to see everyone in fancy dresses and have such a wonderful time! The food, atmosphere and programme, all of that was amazing :) Tonia
Formal dinner was a great evening to be with everyone. The food was amazing and Mr Rohmer’s talk about his life was interesting and great to hear what he has been through and everyone looked amazing. Mia
Our formal dinner was such a wonderful experience. It was such a lovely way to bring the house together. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, I loved all the speeches and Mr Rohmer’s presentation was just amazing. We all had so much fun and I’m so glad I got to experience a Dorter House formal dinner in my final year. Tati
The house formal was amazing, atmosphere was incredible. I am so glad we have this chance to do this in my final year. It was nice the whole house stay together, food taste good. The prefect team did fantastic job with those decoration and organizing. Ruby
The formal dinner was not only a very entertaining evening, but it was beautiful with the Gatsby themed decorations of gold and black. It was so lovely to see everyone elegantly dressed up for the first time in 2 years. And although there were a few teary eyes at the end of night triggered by some moving speeches, it will be a night to remember. We also learnt new meanings to the word ‘resilience’ through Mr Rohmer’s impactful speech and had a laugh at the prefects for their fun facts, which exposed my bad driving skills. Alice W
The formal dinner was so much fun. It was a good opportunity to get to know the girls in house better. The food was delicious, the games were entertaining and Mr. Rohmers speech was very interesting. Thank you to all the people who organised the evening. Franzi
Formal dinner was a blast! We all had so much fun, and everyone outfits were amazing !! The food was so good everyone loved it. We all had fun dancing and singing, and talking to friends. I can’t wait for the next one !! Anna
I thought Dr Lewis' and Evita's speeches was really good and I found Mr Rohmer's speech very interesting. I loved the 20's vibes. Prithvi Ann
Dorter's up and coming actress Liyana entertained the audience in her small but fine role of the Spanish housemaid in Alan Ayckbourn's "Man of the Moment", a well staged co-production of the English and Drama departments. Liyana has a way of bringing elements of comedy to all the drama with her accents and impressive, strong facial expressions, which makes one look forward to the next show that has her in it. Well done!
Olivia, Chloe, Zara, Anna, Hannah, Mila, Diana, Franzi, Annika, Edie, Heather and Clara. They all did ever so well, double rolling as flowers, cards, flamingos and caterpillar or in their distinctive roles as rabbit, hedgehog, cupid, cheshire cat or tweedle dee and tweedle dum. A truly impressive display of the astonishing skill levels of our Legat girls. Alice in Wonderland for sure was mesmerising, entertaining and totally worth watching every second of the highly enjoyable show. The entire stage set, lighting and digital animations were amazing in themselves but the girls brought it all to life and pulled the audience entirely into the story's ban. The majority of the audience of the first show was Dorter girls and staff: we know how much work went into this, hours of rehearsals and training, and we all appreciate it so much. Thank you!
Every year this is a highly competitive event, with houses trying to trump one another with contentious designs and efforts. This year we went one place up, podium finish, bronze medal! What's more we took some valuable points of the girls day houses. Well done Tonia and Alana and many thanks to Ms Harris for your ideas and help!
Halloween was awesome, we started the night with treats and drinks. Then came the costume parade down the stair case striking a pose. It was really good as everybody had dressed up for the occasion. Then we did the haunted house, which meant we walked through the rope course blindfolded while others scared us, by splashing water and jumping out of the alcoves. Jimena and Mia won the prize for loudest screams, Cat won the scariest costume and Evita was the goriest one. Best dress went to Prithvi Ann, funniest costume was Holly and Alice and best group was the Latin Fairies. Most creative was Liyana.
Winning two out of three categories is amazing! Very well done Maya for the Les Mis solo "On My Own" and Anoushka, Trinity and Alice in the band with the Deis boys performing the B 52's. Bronze medal overall, so all in all that's lots of house competition points. Merci also to everyone involved in the small song, Anna, Lianah, Liv B, Regina, who covered the funky 1984 Halloween anthem "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell.
"I can safely say that the Dorter crowd led by Miss Jackson were the best by a long way! They shone their torches for Maya’s number and danced along to "Love Shack"! I don’t know how we didn’t win overall but we should’ve won, we were the best by a long way!"
Special mention needs to go to Diana, who did a genuinely wonderful job on the camera, and roadies Amelia, Alana and Tonia, who stayed behind to clear up the post festival mayhem. Dorter team effort!
A beautiful autumn night, a mildly refreshing drizzle at times, but nowhere the rain we had last time around. The new bbq set is beast! It lights up fast, has the right distance between fire and sausages and produces excellent results, things that aren't burned on the outside and raw on the inside, but just perfect. Everyone was super hungry to start with and when the first feeding frenzy was done, we all settled into a chilled evening of pretzels, potato and sauerkraut salads (thanks to Holroyd Howe), oberzin (a bavarian paprika cheese spread which Jule and Amelia had prepared!), veggie burgers, chicken sausages, frankfurters and bratwurst, ritter sport, spezi (the typical Oktoberfest fanta cola mix), % beers, reebs and music. Diana and Tonia, assisted by Albina lit the fires and did the majority of the bbqing, which for Diana was a real battle to prevent the halloumis from falling through the roster of the fire pitch (which is not really made for this). Well done everyone!
Yes, it's this time of year. Summer is gone, autumn is here and we are entering the season of dark evenings around the fire pitch and sausage grill.
Getting ready for the first such event, Leni, Amelia and Jule went Lidl shopping with Miss Jackson and Mr Rohmer to buy up all the Bratwursts they had, while Tonia and Albina barehandedly assembled the new BBQ set Dr Lewis had bought for us ... more or less without any tools apart from a pair of pliers. Jobs well done!
The L5 girls decided to put on a lovely film night for the Juniors in our house. Was lovely to see so many of our girls there and especially amazing to spend some quality time with our Day Boarders! Once the L5 had popped all of the popcorn, laid out all of the drinks and treats, the commercials and trailers had finished, the lights dimmed and the feature presentation began. Luckily you all seemed to love “Wild Child”, although don’t get any ideas about setting fire to the house! Special thanks to Jimena and Maria for being the popcorn queens and Mia and Maya, who stayed to help clean up at the end, it was a real Dorter House effort!
Finally decent wifi for the long anticipated sofa festival for the Sixth Formers, who had missed out on Reading / Leeds due to corona - and for those who went. We had a variety of tortilla chips, doritos, salsa, jalapeno slices, guacamole and a couple of reebs, while watching the almost full set by Disclosure with their amazing light show, then some Stormzy, Sigrid and Becky Hill, on bbc iplayer. It was good fun!
Time flies by in this place. The U6 had exams over the past two weeks, and lots of them, some were mocks for upcoming public exams in October, some where mocks in preparation of the mocks in November, and all fed into predicted grades. It was pretty stressful and tiring. On top of this, Dorter girls Maddy, Tati and Sany headed off to the Peak district, where they led the DofE Gold expedition. Their skills and true grit were positively commented on by an army sergeant-major who happened to be analysing the drone footage of the zone. Meanwhile, the L6 went to Bushy Woods for their army day. It was sad to see Jade going back home for good, already.
In true Dorter style we undertook various enjoyable and mind-relaxing activities, such as Sany's yoga session, a bingo night, or simply music, dance, macdonalds, beer and card games.
All it needs is music to have a really good time. On Friday we did a long karaoke session, and those of us who went to watch a horror film, ate out at Cosmo or went bowling joined in later. Charlotte and Amanda taught Mr Rohmer how to play poker and he won millions worth of play chips in his second ever game. This was a fun night after a tiring week. Thank you Miss Jackson for putting this on.
The amazing race as every year provided us with lots of unusual team building activities, such as an obstacle course and inflatables, but at the same time it's houses against each other for points. We fought hard in the heat, everyone got involved. We came 5th, beating Cambo and Stud. It's now important to do well against the other girls houses, too.
A good party needs lots of planning and making stuff. So first of all a big thank you to Matron T, Erika and Ellie for baking all the delicious cakes for our "tea party" afternoon. There were scones with cream and jam, fruit salad, ice cream, popcorn and lemonade. We all went to the sports field first to play rounders but it felt a bit like savannah with the sun hitting down. It was fun, but we soon went over to our garden for shade and more games (splat!). Afterwards it was cakes and Sunday afternoon relaxation. Matron D impressed us with her hula hoop skills.
We all had a good time, having picnic in our gazebo at the far end of the lawn, playing games, talking to people from other houses. A beautiful, lazy late summer afternoon, so it was a relaxed event with friends and parents. On stage Amber sang beautifully, as always!
Ellie and Erika joined Matron today in the traditional start-of-the-school-year baking activity. Interview with Erika & Ellie:
So, you did the baking this morning?
Erika: Yeah, it was so cool.
What did you bake?
Erika: We baked a mars-bar or something. Something like this.
Did you enjoy it?
Erika & Ellie: Yes.
Did you learn something new?
Ellie: We were given instructions as we didn't have a set recipe. So, yes.
Erika: Not me so much. I am doing lots of baking in Bulgaria.
The new school year started off with a speed friending in-house event. Thirty three new girls, so this was lively and a great way to get to know each other.
