Fitness Concepts

The following concepts reflect what students are expected to know or demonstrate by the conclusion of the school year. Only students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade are given grades in the area of Fitness Concepts.


Kindergarten

I can demonstrate knowledge of a physically active lifestyle.

  • I can identify changes to the body during and after exercise (heart rate, sweat, breathing rate, hot, thirsty, muscle fatigue, skin color).
  • I can identify benefits of being physically active (heart, muscles, bones).
  • I can recognize that food provides energy for physical activity.


1st Grade

I can demonstrate knowledge of a physically active lifestyle.

  • I can identify changes to the body during and after exercise (heart rate, sweat, breathing rate, hot, thirsty, muscle fatigue, skin color).
  • I can identify benefits of being physically active (heart, muscles, bones).
  • I can differentiate between healthy and unhealthy foods.


2nd Grade

I can demonstrate knowledge of a physically active lifestyle.

  • I can identify changes to the body during and after exercise (heart rate, sweat, breathing rate, hot, thirsty, muscle fatigue, skin color).
  • I can identify benefits of being physically active (heart, muscles, bones).
  • I can recognize the importance of the health balance between good nutrition and physical activity.


3rd Grade

I can demonstrate knowledge of a physically active lifestyle.

  • I can identify changes to the body during and after exercise (heart rate, sweat, breathing rate, hot, thirsty, muscle fatigue, skin color).
  • I can identify benefits of physical activity as a way to become healthier.
  • I can assess fitness levels and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses with teacher prompting.
  • I can identify foods that are beneficial for pre- and post-physical activity.
  • I can recognize the importance of warm-up and cool-down related activities.


4th Grade

I can demonstrate knowledge of a physically active lifestyle.

  • I can identify changes to the body during and after exercise (heart rate, sweat, breathing rate, hot, thirsty, muscle fatigue, skin color).
  • I can identify benefits of physical activity as a way to become healthier.
  • I can assess fitness levels and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.
  • I can identify the importance of hydration choices relative to physical activities.
  • I can identify fitness components (endurance, strength, flexibility, cardio).


5th Grade

I can demonstrate knowledge of a physically active lifestyle.

  • I can identify changes to the body during and after exercise (heart rate, sweat, breathing rate, hot, thirsty, muscle fatigue, skin color).
  • I can identify benefits of physical activity as a way to become healthier.
  • I can assess fitness levels and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.
  • I can recognize and/or create ways to use physical activity to improve fitness levels (fitness plan, exit slip, self-survey, homework worksheet, etc.).
  • I can recognize the impact of food choices relative to physical performance.
  • I can identify fitness components and activities that improve each component.
