Senior Thesis Piece

"The Crown/La Corona", Acrylic on Canvas, 2020

My Senior Thesis piece, called “The Crown/La Corona”, was made during my quarantine while the Coronavirus Pandemic ravaged the world. I found inspiration to make this piece from the Apple Coronavirus commercial, where the first frame is a black-and-white picture of a little girl staring out of her window. I took a screenshot of the photo and placed a filter on it to give it a cooler blue tone. I also looked at photos of myself as a little girl and decided to use that as my primary reference to replace the little girl in the photo. In this painting, I actually do not use any black or any other colors other than blue, navy, violet, white, and grey.

Looking at the painting, the viewer will notice the sad tone within the painting, due to the girl’s unwavering expression, static movement, and her being the only subject of the work. If the viewer also looks closely, the part of her eye that is covered by the window drape has a tear coming down from her eye while she blankly stares into the distance. This symbolizes isolation and how she misses her original life so much. I decided to use my younger self as a reference because it makes a more relatable point of view. As a Senior in high school, I never expected to see myself staring into an uncertain future. The painting also has an unfinished quality to it to represent how incomplete we are when we are isolated. Although there is a reflection in the mirror in the original photo, I have left this out to show how loneliness took a toll on my personality.
