Investigate the world
For GO Night this year, we had to pick two countries to research and present to others. My partners and I picked Peru and Venezuela and learned so much about both countries. We not only had to learn about the countries ourselves but we had to demonstrate our understanding of them to others by presenting the information that we learned. This presentation was significant to my freshman year as it was my first time presenting something so big and it began my more global perspective of life.
This presentation connects to the JAGS pillar Investigate the World as I had to go out and research about two countries I previously knew nothing about. I learned about the issues the countries face, the history behind the countries, and began to see the world on a more global level. This is one of my best works from freshman year because it truly started my JAGS journey.
Take Action
In English this year, I did the Genius Project which was an in depth project with the focus of helping me learn a new skill that I didn't have before. I decided to do something different and create a human and animal bakery. I would create new dog treats and human treats each week which was a challenge for me as I don't usually bake. This project was important to my freshman year as it showed me not to be afraid to try new and challenging things.
This project connects to the JAGS pillar Take Action as I had to take action over 3 months to prove to myself that I can do challenging tasks and learn new skills. This is my best work from my English class because I will always remember the hard work and challenge that came with the project. I will also always remember how proud I was of myself after completing the project and presenting it to my class.
Communicate Ideas
For World History this year, we had to "grade" the decisions that the League of Nations had made during the interwar period after we learned about them throughout the year. We had to use specific examples that we learned to help support the grade we gave them. This assignment got me to think more critically on a global scale as we had to know various different countries and the activities that occurred in each one. This assignment was important to my freshman year as it summed up my whole year in World History.
This assignment connects to the JAGS pillar Communicate Ideas as I got to write about my opinion and communicate with others how I felt about their decisions. I got to give my own stance on the league and discuss what they could've done better or worse. This is my best work from my freshman world history because as I said before, it really allowed me to put everything I learned throughout the year together into one paper.
Recognize Perspectives
For Spanish 3 this year, we had to create a family and be in this family for the entire year. I was the mother in the family and my "husband" and I had two "daughters". For this assignment we had to create a family website and write descriptions about ourselves. This assignment also helped me think more globally as I had to pretend we were from Chile and speak fully in Spanish. This assignment was important to my freshman year as I had to demonstrate my Spanish skills completely.
This assignment connects to the JAGS pillar Recognize Perspectives as I had to pretend like I was from Chile and live just like people who really are from there. I recognized their lifestyle and what it was like to speak in Spanish everyday. This is my best work from Spanish my freshman year as it really encaptured my Spanish writing abilites and allowed me to think at a global level.
Investigate the World
In Biology this year, we had to dissect a frog and learn all of the inside anatomy of the frog. We dissected the frog over a course of a few days and got to learn about the frog in depth. This lab was important to my freshman year as it was truly memorable and allowed me to investigate other species that share the world with us.
This lab connects to the JAGS pillar Investigate the World as I got to learn about another species in detail and investigate the parts which make up the frog. I felt as though I was diving into a part of the world that I had never explored before. This is one of my best works from biology because I had to learn how to properly conduct a lab and also learn about the anatomy of a frog so it was a lot to take on at once, but I did it.
Recognize Perspectives
The two most memorable things from Heifer were spending time outside with no phones and getting to know everyone better. I enjoyed working together as a team in my family to make food for everybody and working together to keep our baby (water-balloon) alive. I learned that I never really saw things in another perspective before, and doing so opened up my eyes to see how people in poverty live and changed how I view the world. I learned just how lucky I am and I shouldn't take anything for granted. I learned that people in other countries suffer more because most don't have enough food resources to feed their entire population, and the US has more than enough resources. However, some people in the US still struggle to find food. I can take action by donating to food banks around me and helping any charity as often as possible to help at least a little in the bigger picture. I can make a change locally by bringing awareness to the issue in my school or places around my community, so that other people can learn about the problem and help out. This trip connects to the JAGS pillar Recognize Perspectives because as I stated before, I saw the perspective of people who live in different countries and how they live on a day-to-day basis. I had to live in their situation and it really helped me begin to understand how different life can be in different countries.
