Civil Rights Gallery Handout
February 9th, 2022 (First Quarter, 2022)
Mrs. Arganza
Sophomore Year - Recognize Perspectives: Explains the perspectives of other people, groups, or individuals as distinct from one’s own perspective.
In US history we learned a lot about civil rights, this project pertained to a gallery walk. In this class we did a lot of them, basically a gallery walk is where you have multiple posters around the room and they all have information on them and you would have to hunt for each question. This gallery walk was about civil rights. Almost all of the questions made you think. While I didn’t always like this class I did enjoy the hands-on activity like this that we did. I think these types of activities really help me with my ability to process information that I read, and analyze text better.
The ISSN goal of recognizing perspectives fits perfectly with this assignment. Not only did we have to look at civil rights from multiple points of views, we had to think how they thought, and put ourselves in their shoes. This class as a whole really made me think what it was like back then when racism was even worse than it is today. This was one of the classes in JAGS that was really necessary in order to better understand how other people live their lives, I would say that it definitely helps me sympathize with people.

4 Point Response Fahrenheit 451
December 6th, 2021(Fourth Quarter, 2021)
Teacher
Sophomore Year - Communicate Ideas: Makes accurate, specific observations about audience response and/or feedback, and proposes specific, targeted changes to communication choices.
I would have to say this was one of my favorite classes. Mrs. Mucky had an amazing teaching style and she always made you feel welcome. This is an example of a 4 point response we did in the class over the book Fahrenheit 451. Over the years we had done many of these, each time I felt I would get better. Not necessarily at writing but rather extracting valuable information from the text. Especially in this class I learned to extract higher quality information from text and sources online. This 4 point response has 4 essential parts to it, which included an introduction, evidence, explanation and analysis. Each and every one of those parts I’ve used in essays to papers to general assignments. It is a skill that has stuck with me since and has probably been one of the more useful ones.
This relates back to communicating ideas, while in this example I wasn’t communicating with someone I was finding a way to better understand the information I was reading and therefore I could have elevated conversations. This artifact specifically has helped me conduct research most of all, later in the year for all 3 of my JAGS classes we made documentaries. This involved heavy research and text analysis all of which benefited from things such as these 4 point responses. My communication skills have greatly improved because of this class and that is all I could have hoped for.

Spanish Final

Sophomore Year - Communicate Ideas: Anticipates how a specific audience with particular perspectives will interpret communicated information; and adjusts the communication to meet the audience’s specific needs.
During my sophomore year I took Spanish III, unlike II this class was a lot harder, it was about writing entire paragraphs instead of just a sentence or two. This is my final for the class, I was tasked with writing 4 individual paragraphs each several sentences long. At the time I remember it being really difficult connecting information that I had learned for the past three years. Despite this I got through it, it has helped me better understand how other languages work. I was getting to the point where I could start to have full but limited conversations with people who actually spoke the language. I think that taking this class really opened my eyes to how other people perceive English. To us it seems so easy and natural but to them it can be very complicated and confusing.
This targeted communicating Ideas due to the fact that it dealt with entire conversations. It was probably one of the harder classes I took but at the same time one of the most rewarding. This forces me to look at the different perspectives of speakers of other languages. I can understand why they might not be inclined to learn english. While at this point in my life I don’t need to know how to speak Spanish I’m sure that this will have a lasting impact. This was my last year of Spanish but if I’m being honest I’m glad I took it that far, Spanish being the second most spoken language in the world I’m sure I’ll get my use out of it.

Salt percentage Lab

Ms. Artur
Sophomore Year - Take Action: Assesses options and plans actions based on evidence, and the perceived potential for impact.
Sophomore year I had to take chemistry, we had many projects over the course of the year. One particular project we had involved us calculating the percentage of salt in a solution. This is very specific but what it taught me was process. These kinds of assignments would build order and help me stay organized. If i'm being completely honest I didn’t enjoy this class, but it did teach me discipline, this was the year after COVID was beginning to go away and hence was the first real year of High School. I felt this class really challenged me both academically and my character. I found that I couldn’t slack off, it kept me on my toes.
This lab focused on the ISSN goal to take action, with this class we had to learn how to accomplish projects and follow procedure. With this lab it helped me reflect on myself. I realized that I needed to change my work ethic, before I slacked off and procrastinated a lot. I still do occasionally but this really helps me to change that. This was one of the first labs we did in the school year and it was a big grade, the assignment was extremely hard but it did require attention to detail. Chemistry as a whole also connected many different previous classes too, it was a combination of math and science, we had a lot of calculations that we had to do in this class.

How the Gym Has changed me
August 1st, 2021(Third Quarter, 2021)
Sophomore Year - Take Action: Reflects on the effectiveness and appropriateness of own actions and advocacy for improvement; describes outcomes of actions and makes note of implications for future action and advocacy.
At the beginning of my sophomore year is around the time I began working out. I didn’t really do it for any particular reason, I just wanted to make myself better. At this point in my life I hadn’t really done anything on my own and at first I didn’t really know what I was doing. I had played sports before and was relatively active but I never really took any of it seriously. One of the reasons I chose to begin working out was for sports. I wanted to get better and I felt the only way was the gym. At this time the golf season was beginning and I wanted to get bigger, so I began working out as much as I could. Most weeks I would go 6 days and then take a rest day off. I learned a lot in the gym, this is how I taught myself self discipline, it was a slow process but I started to understand how working out worked. After a while of being alone I started to get some of my friends too. One of my best friends, Lucas Nasvadi, began working out with me. I would invite him and eventually we both got a gym membership at a local gym that was close to both of our houses. We would both go almost every single day and I can honestly say that it has changed my life. It acted like therapy for me too, any time that I was upset or sad I felt as though I could go to the gym and escape for an hour or two.
The ISSN goal this most closely relates to is Taking action, the gym taught me a lot about taking initiative. I learned to do things on my own, it taught me to be more independent as well. Before going to the gym I would really struggle with self motivation, I felt as though I could never get anything done. I feel as though because of the gym in the future I will be able to accomplish more, I feel as though nothing is harder than getting up everyday and going to the gym, it makes everything else seem much easier. I think this will help me in JAGS because things such as my senior service project will come much easier, I would struggle to get motivated to work on them.
