League of Nations Speech

Mr. Marlett
Freshman Year - Investigate the World: Selects and uses multiple international and domestic sources to identify relevant evidence that addresses a global question.
While history is in the past it is said that if you don’t understand it then you will repeat it. I completely agree with that, during my freshman year I took world history, it involved many units but one of the more memorable ones is the league of nations. Similar to organizations we have today, this ensured peace. The way Mr. Marlett taught us with activities and to put us in the situation. This is a speech I had to write addressing the couple on what should be done next. This was based on things we learned in the weeks leading up to this assignment. I would definitely say that these things stuck with me, forcing myself to be in the position in order to make an important decision really helped me in the coming years think out all possible options.
Focusing on the first pillar of JAGS, investigating the world, this really helped me think about how what I did in that situation would affect everyone globally. This was right in the middle of WWII and as a result has forced me to think how things I do now can affect the world. One example of this would have to be a project I did sophomore year that involved me and friends cleaning plastic from a nearby park. While us alone didn’t make much of an impact if everyone were to do this then it would drastically affect how clean the environment is. This class taught me many lessons and skills like that which is why I found it to be one of the more important classes I took.

Freshman Year - Investigate The World: Analyzes and integrates evidence from sources to develop a well-supported response to a global question.
During my freshman year I took JAGS English 9, a required class for JAGS. During this class we learned a lot about the world, along with my other JAGS classes during my freshman year. It was my first experience looking at things happening outside of the United States. One assignment, following a book we read called Odyssey by Homer, involved us creating our own odyssey or journey. For the project we had a budget, with that budget in mind we were tasked with traveling the world, we had to have 3 stops all in different countries. The 3 I chose were, in order, Berlin, Germany, Madrid, Spain, and finally Warsaw, Poland. Some of the things we needed to include in our budget were, flights, hotel, and even food. Another thing that was required was to write about the customs of the countries we were visiting. I learned things such as popular Holidays, local religion, and other such traditions. The next part of the project had us compile things to do in each country, in order to decide we were told to research popular destinations within the city. This made me learn a lot about each country and what kind of destinations are popular there. The final part of the project was putting together the budget, you had to include a price recap totaling no more than $8,000. This project was a great introduction to what the next years in JAGS would be like.
This project focused on the first pillar of JAGS, Investigate the world. This project involved me researching several different countries, exploring culture and different aspects of the country. I also looked at food that was eaten in each country, I learned a lot about the different foods around the world. Not every country is the same, nor should it be, each country's tradition and culture are what gives it character.
This was one of my first times in JAGS researching other countries, as a freshman this was all very new to me. This project helped set u[ the following years in JAGS, it showed me what I should look for and what I should avoid. This was probably one of the more influential projects of my JAGS journey. While this project wasn’t all that important at the time, I don’t even retain most of the information. It helped me build base points, my freshman year alone taught me most of what I know now in regards to JAGS.

Freshman Year - Communicate Ideas: Demonstrates an understanding of a specific audience by communicating and collaborating using verbal and non-verbal behavior, languages, and strategies that are appropriate to the specific audience.
Back in 6th grade when I first chose to take a year of spanish I had no idea what's in store. I took a year in 6th grade and then took off 7th causing me to have to redo it in 8th. I didn’t regret that though, and soon came my freshman year with spanish 2. Until then it was all just vocabulary and a basic understanding of the language. While I stopped Spanish after 3, the things I learned taking the second most popular language in the world will stick with me forever. This assignment was one of many practice assignments, but it was one of the first times where I had to fully understand what I was reading. It was a written paragraph that I then had to answer 20 questions about. In order to answer the questions you had to fully or almost fully understand the reading. This is one of the first times that Spanish seemed like it would actually be useful, it was starting to seem like something that I actually might use in life.
This connects back to the pillar of JAGS: Communicating Ideas. As I said, Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, making it extremely useful. One such example, JAGS traveled to Puerto Rico in 2023, a country that predominantly speaks spanish, if I would have gone on this trip then my spanish experience would have definitely been helpful. It could have helped me communicate with the locals and learn more about their culture. I’m sure that there will be many more places that I visit in the future where I will use Spanish to some degree. I don’t remember everything I learned but I'm sure it would be much easier to pick it back up than learn from scratch. Communication is what brings people together, without it no one would be where they are, I hope that spanish can further this.

Unit 3 Notes
October 20th, 2020 (Fourth Quarter 2020)
Mr. Preston
Freshman Year - Investigate the World: Poses a researchable question on a local, regional, and/or global, and explains its significance to the global community.
Biology is how life works, the study of how living things work and function are extremely important. No matter who you are or what you do we are all the same when it comes to biology. This artifact is my Unit 3 notes from freshman year, while they are as significant as some of the other's it still means something. These notes talk about the building blocks of life, they are foundational for anything that comes after. It talks about things like how we are all made of carbon and how different molecules help us function. I can’t say I’ve used this information every day since but at the time it certainly impacted me.
These notes apply to the first pillar of JAGS, investigate the world. I would argue that because biology affects everyone then this is globally affected. When filling out these notes I wasn’t thinking about how this affects everyone, but now after much more experience I can appreciate this lesson. My journey through JAGS has definitely helped me to understand why we learn these things, knowing that makes it all more rewarding.

Woodworking Clock Project

Mr. Converse
Freshman Year - Take Action: Reflects on the effectiveness and appropriateness of own actions and advocacy for improvement; describes outcomes of actions and makes note of implications for future action and advocacy
One of my favorite classes freshman year was Woodworking I. This class taught me a lot, especially how to work hard and get things done. In this class it involved a semester-long project in which we were to build a clock from scratch with the exception of the moving parts. We began with learning how to use all of the machines and then we were required to pass a safety test before we were allowed to get our hands dirty. We then had to draw up our projects, we had to know how much wood we needed to use, in this stage we also chose the type of wood we were going to use as they all look different. Slowly throughout the semester we would work on this project in order to get closer to completion. During this time there were many obstacles including COVID which towards the end of the semester took us out of school for 2 weeks only making the project harder. But nonetheless I was finished, looking back at this project there are definitely things I would have done differently but I’m still content with this class and the things I learned as a result.
This project focused on Taking action, the project involved us planning and then building a clock with help a lot with future planning. I would definitely say that my skills have improved as a result of this. Looking at it now most of the skills I learned will now be used to complete my senior capstone, which involves construction. The lessons I learned because I took action will forever be with me and I hope that one day that will mean I will be able to inspire and make a positive change in the world.
