I completed my Capstone project with Adrijana V. and Tatum B. In short, we implmented our Teen Initiative Club at the middle school, by adding baskets in 3 restrooms and stocking them with feminine hygiene products for the students to use. Additionally, we worked with Jackson's Family Support Specialist, Mrs. Renaldo, and created 17 personal hygiene kits for students in need throughout the district to use to get ready in the morning at school.
Our Capstone connects to all 4 JAGS pillars, Recognize Perspectives, Take Action, Communicate Ideas, and Investigate the World. This is because we worked not only in our group of 3, but also with a plethora of others throughout the district. We also ran 2 drives in order to gain donations and we held an event were we put together the baskets for Mrs. Renaldo. Lastly, we learned just how much issues like this impact the world, and helped to make a positive impact on the community around us. This was the most significant project of my entire senior year, not only because of the effort needed, but because of the long lasting impact we have created.
For Government I wrote a paper about a law that I would like to see reinstated into everday life in the United States. The law I wrote about was preclearance, as it was once implemented but got removed years ago. I followed a current proposal in the House and Senate in order to write my paper, as it contained everything I was looking for to be added back into law.
This connects to the pillars of Recognize Perspectives and Investigate the World. Through the research I completed I looked at multiple different perspectives on my proposed law throughout the country. I also investigated why it was removed in the first place, as well as why it should be added back now. This was the most important part of my Government class because I got to see many different aspects of an issue that is very important to the United States and I expanded my knowledge in many different ways.
For my English Comedy & Satire class my groupmates and I made a presentation about the Silent Film Era, which was from the 1890s-1920s. I learned about how and why it started, as well as why it came to an end. We did research over the most prominent figures from this time period and found many examples such as Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin.
This connects to the JAGS pillar, Communicate Ideas, because my group members and I had to work together to gain information about this era. We also had to present what we found to the class, further sharing our ideas and communicating what we had learned. This was the most significant part of my senior year English classes because I immersed myself into a different time period and learned about something that otherwise I might not have never even known about.
My Senior soccer season taught me many valuable skills that will stick with me through the rest of my life. This year, I was fully on Varsity, but that didn't mean that I always played or got time on the field. I had to put in a lot of effort to try to get playing time and to show the coaches that I deserved to play.
My season connects to the pillar of Take Action as I had to push myself to become a better player and teammate throughout the year. I learned that I had to work for what I wanted, and just because I was a senior, that didn't mean that I was going to get what I wanted. I had to become the best version of myself, which involved not only growing my character, but also helping others to grow into the best that they could be. This season was a lot different in general, but I am very grateful for the experiences and friendships that I gained. This was significant to my Senior year as I put everything on the table that I had left as this was my last time playing organized soccer with everyone.
