ENGLISH
We had a self-chosen project in English called our Genius Project. I chose to research the psychology behind a serial killer. With this, I created a podcast called REDRUM. Because it was a self-chosen project, it really tested my ability to communicate ideas. I had to pitch my idea and then have a consent communication with my teacher so she could check my progress. This project allowed me to explore one of my biggest interests and helped me learn more about what I wanted to do in the future.
SCIENCE
At the end of the year, we have an event called Summit Night. The freshman had to choose a country and learn about how their environment is and what they do to improve that or what they don't. I worked with one other person, and we researched Albania and what it is that they do to help improve their environment and what they do to harm it. This helped me recognize perspectives and learn more about what it is like to live in another country.
HISTORY
The GO Night project for your Freshman year is to research a country and compare it with a different one. My friend and I chose to research Belgium and compared it with another group who did South Korea. This helped me recognize perspectives and learn about foreign nations.
EXTRA CURRICULAR
I started my first year of football and played right guard. This was a challenge for me as I've never played before and at the time was the only girl on the team. I ended up falling in love with the game and found my passion for lifting weights.
SPANISH
I took Spanish 2 and worked on improving my grammar and expanding my vocabulary. I also got to research famous Hispanic people. This year is when I truly found my love for learning another language and wanted to work towards becoming bilingual. Taking Spanish helps me investigate the world and learn about Hispanic cultures.
Heifer
The most memorable moment from Heifer was playing 4 Square with my friends and when you became king you had to create your government. We saw things like a communist monarchy and all sorts of weird things. I also really enjoyed helping the refugees during the simulation and seeing AJ make a stew that was mostly water and cabbage. I learned things like how to keep a fire going and how to portion food so everyone can eat. I also learned that you don't need a lot to have a good time and to be thankful for what you do have. Something I learned about myself was that I can actually cook and that I have more than I think. I can take action in many different ways. I could volunteer, donate, raise awareness, etc. I can also take advantage of my senior capstone to help out with things I really care about and make a difference that way. By taking action I can start making a change in my community and if I change the way I utilize things and become more aware that change could become global. With this said this trip was really fun and taught me a lot about the power I do have even as a freshman and how to utilize that.
