AP US History
My sophomore year, I took AP US History, and it quickly became one of my favorite classes. Growing up, I always loved history, which finally gave me a chance to explore the US's complex history. My favorite project we did in that class was when we talked about the controversial 1920s cultural wars and compared them to the present day. Being able to take this class helped me investigate the world, which is crucial, as if we do not learn from history, we will repeat it.
English
The summit night project for sophomore year was creating a documentary. I worked with 4 other people on this project. We chose to talk about hate crimes towards the LGBTQ+ community. We looked at the incident with a trans student being killed in Oklahoma, and took an international look at Singapore, the Philippines, Brazil, and Sweden. This would be a catalyst for future project inspirations. Most importantly, I was able to recognize perspectives of those who may or may not agree with my beliefs and what life is like in other countries for LGBTQ+ individuals.
SPANISH
Spanish 3 really allowed me to expand my Spanish by learning primarily grammar throughout this year. This would allow me to become a more confident speaker. My favorite part about the class was creating our families. My family created a background where we were a family circus. It allowed me to connect with the other people in my class. The ability to "travel" to a different country at the end of the year allowed me to explore other Spanish cultures.
Mock Trial
This was my second year of doing a high school mock trial. I was an attorney for the plaintiff that year, and my team would win at districts, but unfortunately, do to the JAGS trip to Costa Rica, we weren't able to compete at regionals. My witness that year was an inexperienced freshman who, through his hard work and my believing in him, would win Outstanding Witness. Watching him succeed at competition and grow into becoming a great witness was one of the best things, and I was so grateful that I could work with him. Being on the mock trial team is one of the best ways I've learned to communicate ideas.
Chemistry
Chemistry tested my ability to really focus on harder school work that didn't necessarily interest me. The mole project really highlighted this. I am not the most artistically inclined, and I didn't really like chemistry, so it was tough to find the motivation to complete this project.
Traveling to Costa Rica was my first time traveling internationally and I was able to learn about how to travel internationally. I got to try a lot of new foods and experience the beautiful natural environment. Exploring the rain forests was one of my favorite experience as in Ohio there is really nothing like that. There was also a lot of things I didnt enjoy on the trip and it now better prepares me for international travel and how to go about such large trips. I will forever be greatful for the oppurtunity to travel to Costa Rica.
