Our end of unit expedition to the Beacon on Hanham Mount. We learnt that this was where John Wesley preached to outdoor congregations almost 300 years ago!
INTENT: to find out where our school is.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to look at a large map of the local area and identify Beacon Rise and where it sits in the local neighbourhood.
IMPACT: the children will understand that their school is part of a community.
INTENT: to know how the area has changed in recent time.
IMPLEMENTATION: to look again at the big maps used in Lesson One and also at older maps showing previous iterations of BR and surrounding area. How has BR changed? How many buildings were there on the older maps?
IMPACT: children will realise that places and buildings evolve over time.
INTENT: to be able to identify local landmarks.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to be shown pictures of a number of local landmarks (the War Memorial, the Tabernacle, the Beacon) and, as a class, to locate them on their map. How many of the landmarks have they seen before?
IMPACT: children will be more aware of their surroundings and recognise significant landmarks.
INTENT: to be able to plan and follow a route using a map.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to look at the map of the local area (which should be familiar to them by now). Where is BR school? Where is the Beacon? Children to practise planning routes to local landmarks, then to plan the best and safest route from BR to the Beacon, ready for our expedition.
IMPACT: children will understand what to consider when planning a route.
INTENT: to name and locate continents and oceans.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to explore world maps and fact files on each continent and ocean. In small groups, children to identify these on their world maps and then to sing the 'Seven Continents' and 'Five Oceans' songs.
IMPACT: children will be able to name and locate the oceans and continents.
INTENT: to learn about Iqaluit and Nunavut and compare them to life in the UK.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to watch a video comparing the lives of a child in the Shetland Isles and a child in Iqaluit. What similarities and differences are there to Bristol? Children to compare the human and physical characteristics and then to find and add Iqaluit Nunavut and Canada to their world maps.
IMPACT: children will be able to identify some of the differences in human and physical geography between Iqaluit and Bristol.
INTENT: To know what festivals are and how different festivals are celebrated.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children will learn about a range of festivals including Kumbh Mela, Glastonbury, Songkran, Holi and Brazil carnival. Children will identify why, how and where each festival is celebrated. Children will immerse themselves into the festivals of Holi, Songkran and Brazil carnival through colourful blow painting, carnival dancing and water painting activities.
IMPACT: Children were able to identify if the festival was celebrating art, food, music, religion or something else. They were also able to identify if the festival was local, national or international.
INTENT: To identify features of a landscape and a map.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children discussed what a map is and what it is used for. The children looked at a compass and identified the four compass points and then looked at an aerial view of Beacon Rise. Children worked in pairs or threes and plotted different features of the school using shapes and symbols and represented this in a key.
IMPACT: Children understood that maps represent an area from an ariel perspective . They learnt that shapes and symbols are used to represent features.
INTENT: To celebrate our own festival!
IMPLEMENTATION: Combining all of our learning this term, we put on our own festival with music, a special samba dancing performance, games and treats!
IMPACT: Children had a wonderful time celebrating!
