Intermediate Art still focuses on Elements of Art and The Principal of Design but puts more of an emphasis on student being able to hone in their art skills. While we still engage in the basic art mediums of drawing and painting this course also touches upon graphic design, typography and drafting.
This course is an exploration of visual art forms and their cultural connections for the student with little experience in the visual arts. It includes a brief study of art history and in depth studies of the Art Elements & Principles of Design and methods used in creative processes and thought. Students will learn how to develop system for understanding visual art in all forms based on:
Description: Explaining a work of art from an objective point of view, its physical attributes, and formal construction.
Analysis: A detailed look at a work of art that combines physical attributes with subjective statements based on the viewer’s reaction to the work.
Context: Any historical, religious, or environmental information that surrounds a particular work of art and which helps to understand the work’s meaning.
Meaning: A statement of the work’s content. A message or narrative expressed by the subject matter.
Judgment: A critical point of view about a work of art concerning its aesthetic or cultural value.
After completing this course, students will be able to interpret works of art based on this system of analysis; explain the processes involved in artistic production, themes, and the political, social, cultural, and aesthetic issues that artists examine in their work; and explain the role and effect of the visual arts in societies, history, and other world cultures.

Recommended Materials for the Class:
Pencils of different hardness. Include at least the following: 2H, 2B, 4B and 6B. You are welcome to buy others if you want to.
A set of water color paints (the Crayola ones are good enough for this class but I would not recommend them for advanced art courses).
Drawing paper- I have available if needed.
Drawing/Sketch pad with at least 25 or more pages.
A box of color pencils. It must at least include the primary and secondary colors, plus black and white. Prismacolor pencils are very nice but not required. Most art stores sell individual pencils so you can replace only what you need. If you feel these are too pricy, I recommend the Crayola brand color pencils, specially the water color pencils. Those are almost as good as the professional brands. Stay away from generic brands. They are usually not as good.
Some scissors, glue or glue stick, construction paper of different colors (wait on this one, I’ll let you know when we will use it).
optional- not required
Colorful markers (Primary/secondary)
Charcoal sticks: Soft, medium and hard
Paper stumps and tortillions (blending paper rolls)
Acrylic Paint
