This is the beginning Art class with particular emphasis on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Student are also exposed to a wide range of art disciplines including painting, drawing, and sculpture using multiple different media. Art-1 is a prerequisite for all other, more advanced art subjects at NBHS.
Welcome to Visual Arts Beginning-
The purpose of this course is to give you and introduction to the basic ideas that drive the process of art making. There are no prerequisites for this class but this class is a prerequisite to more advanced art courses. (Art 2/3/4/Mixed Media/Photography/Ceramics/Sculpture/AP art)
You are not expected to have any prior experience making art in order to take this course, however, there will be opportunities for those with experience to improve their skills.
This course will introduce the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. It will also give you the opportunity to apply these building blocks and create your own art for each Element and Principle of Design project. You will also have weekly homework assignments to be completed in your sketchbook/drawing pad.
Most of the assignments can be completing with some very basic art materials. The syllabus includes a list of the recommended materials for this class.
We will begin by learning about how to use the Canvas platform. Second we will be creating a "ALL About Me" worksheet. This will allow you to get the opportunity to show off your skills and understand how the class will function. It will also allow you to explore and ask unique questions.
If at any point throughout the course you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me through canvas or email.
Recommended Materials for the Class:
Pencils of different hardness. Include at least the following: 2H, 2B, 4B and 6B. You are welcome to buy others if you want to.
A set of water color paints (the Crayola ones are good enough for this class but I would not recommend them for advanced art courses).
Drawing paper- I have available if needed.
Drawing/Sketch pad with at least 25 or more pages.
A box of color pencils. It must at least include the primary and secondary colors, plus black and white. Prismacolor pencils are very nice but not required. Most art stores sell individual pencils so you can replace only what you need. If you feel these are too pricy, I recommend the Crayola brand color pencils, specially the water color pencils. Those are almost as good as the professional brands. Stay away from generic brands. They are usually not as good.
Some scissors, glue or glue stick, construction paper of different colors (wait on this one, I’ll let you know when we will use it).
optional- not required
Colorful markers (Primary/secondary)
Charcoal sticks: Soft, medium and hard
Paper stumps and tortillions (blending paper rolls)
Acrylic Paint
