MATHCOUNTS
Students that are enrolled in grades 6-8 in all types of schools—public, private, charter, virtual and home schools—are eligible to participate in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series. The competition covers a wide range of math topics but also requires students to quickly arrive at the answer apply patterned related strategies developed through lots of practice.
A competition is comprised of 4 rounds - Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round.
Sprint Round: 30 questions in 40 minutes; students work individually; no calculators permitted
Target Round: 4 pairs of questions; 6 minutes per pair; students work individually; calculators are permitted
Team Round: 10 questions in 20 minutes; 4 team members work together; calculators are permitted
Countdown Round (Unofficial): Fast-paced round where students battle head-to-head tournament style
