The following information and activities are suggestions on how your class can extend the message of the book into the classroom. You will also have an opportunity to sign up to work together as a class on a service project. Start brainstorming with your class on ways that they can make positive change in their class, school, community, and world!
Before Reading:
Look at the book jacket (open the book all the way so that students can see both front and back together). Ask students to describe the cover. What is the girl doing? Look at the mosaic in the background. A mosaic is a picture made up of little pieces. What colors do students see on the wall behind her?
During Reading:
Ask students:
What are some things the children are doing to be helpful? How do you think it makes them feel? How do you think the people they are helping feel?
After Reading:
Ask students:
What are some ways the children were helpful in the book? How can you be helpful at school? At home?
