IT Asset Management

Thursday 13th October 2022 | 25 Copthall Avenue, London, EC2R 7BB

IT Asset Management seeks to manage, control and protect an organisation's IT Assets, including hardware, software and cloud assets. A particular focus of this conference stream is the management of software licenses, a challenging and complex discipline which requires a mix of contractual, legal, financial and technical skills.

10.10 - 10.55 | ISO19770-1 certification & audit process

Jade Reilink | Account Manager | Brand Compliance

ISO certificates help consumers and companies to make their purchase choices. Producers or service providers use the certificate to strengthen their competitive position. They can show that a company's product, service or management system meets certain requirements. Sometimes a certificate is required. For example, it may be made mandatory by the government, insurers or a client who requires a certificate from their supplier. It can also be a form of self-regulation. Companies and industry organizations also often make mutual agreements and have this set of rules checked by an independent audit firm.

ISO19770-1 is the international standard for IT asset management, and a group of key industry players, including the ITAM Forum, ISO working group 21 and the BCS SM-ITAM specialist group have been collaborating to define a certification schema to allow organisations to certify their IT asset management system against the standard.

In her talk, Jade will explain:

  • The process for attaining certification

  • The importance of the Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle

  • What organisations should do to prepare for certification

  • The audit cycle

  • What to expect during a certification audit

If you or your organisation is interested in exploring ISO19770-1 certification, attending this talk is a must!

11.20 - 12.05 | Building a business case for third party software maintenance

Mark O'Neill | Head of Sales - Northern Europe | Origina

With 90% of IT spend locked up maintaining existing systems, third party software maintenance can be instrumental in driving down ‘keeping the lights on’ costs and capturing dramatic savings to accelerate transformation projects.

How can procurement leaders and SAM owners build a fair and balanced business case for third-party software maintenance? How can you overcome obstacles presented by IT colleagues and help the executive team understand the strategic impact?

This session will help you uncover the ‘hidden’ cost categories of traditional vendor support models and show how to build an ROI model based on industry benchmarks and best practices.

12.05 - 12.50 | Build, buy, borrow - playing the SAM game

Stuart Dicken | Principal Consultant | bedigital

There is more than one way to skin a cat - and there is more than one way to do SAM!

In this session Stuart will share his insight and experience of 25 years in the ITAM industry as to when an organization should consider to buy, build or borrow SAM Services.

  • When do you build? What are the opportunities and challenges around building a SAM team, upskilling and training existing employees?

  • When do you buy? We know know it's nearly impossible to 'do' SAM without tools, but when is technology the answer?

  • When do you borrow? There are any number of SAM service providers keen to lend you their skills and experiencee, so when you should you take advantage of these services?

We will look at this from the view of people, technology and governance and the value your organization can achieve from the right combination of build, buy and borrow to fulfil its SAM resourcing requirements and achieving your SAM outcomes.

13:55 - 14:35 | A tagging taxonomy for a hybrid IT world

Rory Canavan | CEO | SAM Charter

FinOps races ahead with managing the costs associated with bringing business data to the cloud, but how can the on-prem environment keep pace? Should it even bother?

In the FinOps world, tags are key to identifying and communicating costs so product and delivery teams have the visibility they need to manage costs and decide what cloud services are earning their keep. In the meantime, ISO WG21 has expended much time and thought in creating tagging taxonomies such as software and hardware id tags to make managing assets easier, but they have not had as wide adoption as was hoped.

So where to now with tagging? Rory provides an introduction on how to blend the different approaches, as well as delving deeper into the “why” of the topic, making the case that yes, tags are worth it - they have the potential to bring the cloud and on-premises world together to enable the development of holistic asset management and financial management practices that can help firms understand the total cost of ownership of their services and maximise their return on investments.

14.35 - 15.20 | Microsoft is revamping the hosting landscape. So what?

Alexander Golev | CEO | SAMexpert.com

On the 01 October 2022, Microsoft introduced significant changes to “Bring Your Own License” terms and conditions as well as updated rules for service providers. As a result, everyone’s affected: end-clients, small client providers and even hyper-scalers like AWS. Some have been positively affected. Some will have to re-adjust how they do their business.

So, what’s in it for you? Let’s look at the consequences: the good, the bad and the ugly.
