About Our School:

Our neighborhood has had a public school since shortly after the turn of the nineteenth century. Originally known as “Todd’s Academy,” Roland Park Elementary/Middle School (RPEMS) was located at Roland Avenue and St. John’s Road. RPEMS moved to its present location in 1924.

In its early years, RPEMS offered instruction for kindergarten through ninth grades. In 1957, a new junior high curriculum pioneered the then-revolutionary idea of elective subjects - eighth graders could choose from a list of options that included foreign languages, music, art, home economics, and industrial art.

In the early 1980’s, the school was organized as an elementary school (kindergarten through fifth grades) and a middle school (sixth through eighth grades). Over the years the old building has changed (the library and other central rooms occupy what used to be a courtyard) and expanded (with a gymnasium on the back and a new wing in the front built in the mid-1980s).

RPEMS serves a highly diverse population and ranks among the top schools in Maryland in academic achievement. The school has earned the Maryland EGATE Award (excellence in Gifted and Talented Education), a Blue Ribbon for Academic Excellence, as well as national acclaim for its commitment to integrating the arts into the school’s curriculum.

Roland Park works closely with local universities and college (Maryland Institute College of Art, Goucher College, The Johns Hopkins University, among others). Each year, pre-service teachers (interns) work alongside our faculty and staff. This also allows many students the opportunity to have two teachers in the classroom.
