Spelling tests will typically be on Fridays with one spelling unit done every week or every other week. The lists begin with first grade review words and progressively get more challenging. Spelling lists will be sent home on spelling weeks, but all words are listed below for your convenience. The purpose of the tests are to track each student's understanding of phonics/spelling patterns. If there should be a change in spelling for a particular week, it will be noted in your child's Homework Folder.
Although some students and parents believe spelling is a subject of the past due to being able to use technology such as spell check and google, the truth is... students still need to be able to spell. For example, on their college entrance exams such as the SATs and ACTs, and on AP Literacy tests, students must be able to spell independently. This time seems to be a very long way off from second grade, but from the first day of kindergarten, the goal of educators is to get students "college" ready. With this in mind, we will do our best to help your second graders in this subject area. However, to be completely successful, practice must take place in school AND at home.
