1)Our first project of the year will help us learn more about our classmates with a fun guessing game activity. "Me Bags" will be sent home in the next few weeks with complete instructions.
Me Bags and instructions will be sent home on (TBD) and are due (TBD) Have fun!!
2)WRITER'S WORKSHOP-please send in a photograph of your child in action (riding a bike, playing in the snow, enjoying an amusement ride, picking a pumpkin, flying a kite, playing in a soccer game, etc.) for a writing project we are starting soon. The students need to be able to remember the event in the photo as it will serve as the topic of their first personal narrative in grade 2. Please send in the photos by 10/14. The photos will be returned at the end of the year in your child's Writing Journal. Thank you!
OCTOBER: Shape Scarecrows
Next up will be a Scarecrow shape project. The children can use some basic shapes such as square, triangle, circle, but I will be encouraging the use of more sophisticated shapes as such as...trapezoid, hexagon, pentagon, oval, rhombus, octagon, nonagon, parallelogram, decagon to bring the project into second grade!
This project will be sent home with instructions. The children will be expected to name the shapes they have used to create their scarecrow as they share their project with the class. Again, we want to use more sophisticated shapes to go beyond circle and square. Try to use trapezoids, pentagons, hexagons, etc. We are reviewing and exploring numerous shapes in class. HAVE FUN!
Halloween Stories: (Optional, In Class Project)
Students will choose a character and setting to create a Halloween Story.
Students should include adjectives in their writing and use time words (first, that evening, one afternoon, finally, etc) These will be Writer's Workshop teaching points.
Students should have correct spelling and punctuation.
We will be working on writing "small moments" that are interesting and descriptive rather than droning on and on and on which makes for very boring stories!
Graded Homework Project...Turkeyville!! Instructions, materials and grading rubric are being sent home on TBD Please check your child's folder. This assignment is due TBD. The children have been informed about the project. We discussed expectations, options and looked at many examples. The class is very excited. The grade they earn will count as a Writing grade and a Social Studies grade. We can't wait to see your community worker creations! Any questions or concerns, contact me at caurilio@bbesnj.org
Thank you and have fun!
