1. Brief description and aims of module:
To develop your application and practice of the practical and theoretical skills you learned at Level 4, you work on productions in an assistant capacity. Your production work reflects your subject specialisms across a variety of projects. These are all live briefs and so you must work to a high standard and demonstrate professional practice, problem solving and collaborative skills throughout. You apply your knowledge under the guidance and leadership of Level 6 students.
The module aims to:
Foster intermediate practical production practice
Promote professional practice
Develop teamwork, practical, critical and organisational skills
2. Outline syllabus
At Level 5, you undertake two assistant production roles (in this module and module TFEP5005) and may undertake an optional third role in module TFEP5006. Throughout the year, you engage in a broad range of roles on internal and/or external productions, in which you must demonstrate a wide range of skills and disciplines. All productions are subject to approval by the Module Leader. These can be in a single specialist discipline or across a broader range of subjects dependent on your skills interest and personal development. Roles include, but are not limited to, the following:
Scenic Designer (Small Scale)
Costume assistant
Lighting
Sound
Video Designer
Assistant Stage Manager
Deputy Stage Manager
Head of Scenic Construction (small scale)
Construction assistant
Scenic Artist
Prop Maker
Draftsman
You must nominate the 2 or 3 roles you wish to undertake, but the Module leader will assign roles to specific productions, taking into account your achievements to date and any areas for development. Productions include collaborations with:
Acting
Music
Dance
Film and TV
Events & Festivals Management
Each production offers unique and original challenges. Mirroring industry practice, the learning environment works within intensive production periods, interspersed with periods for personal development and reflection.
3. Teaching and learning activities
Teaching is through a simulated work environment, where you work on production staged by the wider university network. Tutors provide subject specific lecture support throughout the production and planning process, tech week and operation of each production. Additional support is available through peer mentoring, tutorials and one to one formative feedback. Production design and planning meetings are held weekly throughout each production period. Pre and post show role seminars happen at the beginning and end of each production to allow for group preparation and reflection.
