1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module aims to provide you with an introduction to counselling psychology. The module’s objectives are:
to enhance understanding of the work of counselling psychologists and other psychological therapists;
to provide an overview of the major theoretical orientations informing practice in counselling psychology; and
to develop skills in psychological formulation.
Please note: successful completion of this module does not constitute a professional qualification in either counselling or counselling psychology.
2. Outline syllabus
A programme of lectures and seminars/tutorials will address the following topics:
Key aspects of the therapeutic process:
The therapeutic relationship
Listening and counselling skills
Cultural competence
Reflective practice/the reflective practitioner model
Different approaches to psychological therapy (e.g. couple therapy, family therapy, group therapy, online/telephone therapy)
Core professional competencies for counselling psychologists:
Practising ethically
Assessment
Formulation
Evidence-informed intervention and evaluation
Research and consultancy
Major theoretical orientations in counselling psychology:
Person-centred approaches
Psychodynamic approaches
Cognitive behavioural approaches
Systemic approaches
Common presenting issues in counselling psychology:
Life events and psychosocial transitions
Identity
Stress and coping
Relationship problems
Loss and bereavement
3. Teaching and learning activities
Learning: Through lectures, seminar activities, additional learning materials made available on the VLE, and independent study.
