1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module introduces students to the study of Business Psychology. We will therefore take an evaluative, theoretical, and evidence-informed approach to the core areas of Business Psychology. The module will also begin to look at how these core areas are applied in real life. The overall aim of this module therefore is to introduce students to the practice of Business Psychology, and objectives are:
For students to develop an evidence- and theoretically-informed understanding of the core Business Psychology areas of practice.
For students to gain an critical understanding of the core areas of Business Psychology and their applications in practice.
To gain an understanding of the job role of a Business Psychologist in the UK.
2. Outline syllabus
A programme of lectures, seminars, and tutorials will address the following topics:
Introduction to Business Psychology
Methods and Consultancy in Business Psychology
Learning, Training and Development
Leadership, Engagement and Motivation
Wellbeing at Work
Work Design, Organisational Change and Development
Psychological Assessment at Work
3. Teaching and learning activities
The programme will consist of thirteen two hour lecture sessions and thirteen two hour seminars, complemented by ad-hoc tutorials. Lectures will cover key theoretical, empirical, and applied evidence around the use of Business Psychology in the workplace. Seminars will cover key skills required for any successful role as a Business Psychologist, and look at how these are applied within and with organisations. The module content will be supplemented by a module handbook and fully supported by electronic resources on the VLE.
