1. Brief description and aims of module:
Brief description and aims of module
The module is designed to give you the understanding of sports law as a whole but also in context. Sports Law in the UK is a relatively niche and neuveau subject matter and covers a wide range of legal and socio legal areas.
Sports law will be examined through various lenses; Participant, Regulatory body, Commercial partnerships and Big business. International regulatory examples as well as structures such as the NFL and NBA will be considered as well as European regulation and structures such as the English Premier League and Gallagher Premiership.
In this module, you will be able to demonstrate the following graduate attributes:
• Will be employable: Equipped with the skills necessary to flourish in the global workplace, able to work in and lead teams;
• Will be creative: Able to innovate and to solve problems by working across disciplines as professional or artistic practitioners;
• Will be critical thinkers: Able to express their ideas in written and oral form, and possessing information literacy.
2. Outline syllabus:
Topics covered might include:
• History of sports regulation and governance
• Theoretical underpinning of regulation and governance
• Legal regulaton of Governing bodies
• Sport and the EU
• Commercial protection
• Match fixing and corruption
• Sport and Employment
• Participation and discrimination
3. Teaching and learning activities:
You will be taught by way of 1x 2-hour lecture and 1x 2-hour seminar each week. Lectures will introduce and explore substantive subjects as specified above. Seminars will include a variety of activities including class discussion, scenario analyses, role-play, written and research exercises and other formative activities.
