1. Brief description and aims of module:
It is useful for any budding game developer to have a practical understanding of the fundamentals of 3D game art creation. A working knowledge of the topic allows for independent exploration of more sophisticated techniques, and critically, the ability to discuss creative intentions with 3D art specialists clearly and through use of accurate terminology. The aims of 3D Game Art is to offer an opportunity for you to develop this working knowledge.
In this module, you learn the basics of 3D modelling to create environments, characters and props for video games. You learn how to ‘think in 3D’, and make appropriate creative and technical decisions such as what object features to model and the level of detail required to communicate information visually. You engage the full asset creation process - from concept sketching to modelling, texturing, rigging and animating - and explore tried-and-tested methods and technical tools to prepare game ready assets. We then cover how to import objects into a games engine, and consider how multiple assets come together to construct compelling in-game environments.
2. Outline syllabus

Class sessions will include technical demonstrations, creative exercises and discussion on approaches/perspectives on 3D game art.
Independent Study
3D modelling and related topics in 3D game art require time and patience to learn - the learning curve is fairly steep. We recommend that you try to make something new each week, and draw on external learning materials to extend your knowledge as you progress through the module. Committing to the topic is needed in order to gain the technical knowledge needed for you to leverage your creativity.
