Please note that in order to take this module you must have studied FTV4003-20 Introduction to Studio Production II.
1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module will provide you with a theory/practice approach to studio television production.
This module aims to consolidate and extend the awareness, learning outcomes, knowledge and practical skills developed in FTV4003-20: Introduction to Studio Production II. Working as a studio crew member in a range of roles you will produce at least one ‘as live’ television production. Extra technical and creative skills development, along with more challenging team-based work, is included to help students gain experience in managing increasingly complex productions. All areas will be treated in detail with opportunities for some skill specialisation.
2.Outline syllabus:
The workshops and seminars will cover:
Introduction and practice of OB (Outside Broadcast) kit
Develop ideas for OB production and practice
Preparing relevant documentation to support ideas for a television production for a specified audience
Research to produce an in-depth interview in a multi-cam studio environment (OB/Studio) on a given subject
Pitch ideas and participate in peer/tutor feedback and Q&A
In a production team produce a ‘pilot’ television studio programme
Practice health and safety in a multi-camera television production
Produce Risk Assessments for VT single camera location work
More in-depth practice of television studio craft skills and studio technical operational roles and techniques to support the production of a television programme
Apply technical information to manage data (video) for play back/inserts
Working as a studio television crew, produce a television programme for specific duration
There will be a greater emphasis (than in Year 1) on planning an entire project from concept to delivery. The aim here is to handle at least one production challenge; one live event (actual or simulated) or one scripted and fully pre-produced item. These will make full use of the BSU’s large multi-camera studio facilities.
There will be a basic introduction to Outside Broadcast practices and the use of Green Screen.
In addition to practice based learning, developing a personal, reflective approach to one’s industry-relevant skills and employability will be encouraged e.g. by way of:
Recognising skillsets within film, television and digital media.
CV & online portfolio development.
Researching into employment possibilities.
Critical reading and note taking.
Critical thinking.
Analytical Writing.
Communicating effectively in the workplace.
Developing a personal approach to creative or visual research (workbook/blog etc.).
3.Teaching and learning activities:
The module supports the need for a strong learning culture, providing a climate for continuous development through the fostering of active participation and the generating of a collaborative and individual learning experience as well as an awareness of ever-evolving new social media technologies.
Formal contact will comprise of lectures / seminars and the other, immersive sessions of industry-professional led workshops. During part of this time students will be introduced to new skills and knowledge and have the opportunity to put into practice the skills and knowledge already learned. The remaining time will be spent in independent study, preparing for the sessions and exploring and reflecting on the techniques and concepts introduced in taught sessions. Access to studio spaces on campus will be provided and timetabled.
