Please note that students outside the Musical Theatre Pathway must pass an audition to take this module. If you have previously taken Musical Theatre Skills or Musical Theatre Workshop, these will serve as your audition; if not, we will be in touch after module selection to arrange your audition submission.
1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module explores the processes of creating a musical theatre performance piece.
2. Outline syllabus:
In the first part of the module, we explore the core elements of a musical and professional approaches to conceiving, structuring and writing original works. In the second part of the module, you will have the opportunity to apply these skills and knowledge in the development of a musical theatre work.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module learning will consist of interactive seminars and workshops followed by rehearsals and staff-led feedback sessions. You will be expected to undertake substantial weekly Directed Study assignments out of class including assigned readings and exercises, research, planning and rehearsing and to participate actively in class discussions.
Please note that this module assumes an existing intermediate level of musical theatre performance skill, including vocal technique. For this reason, students not on the Drama (Musical Theatre) programme are asked to submit an audition before the start of the academic year - we will explain this further in module choice meetings and via email to anyone interested in taking the module.
