1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module builds on the concepts and practices introduced at Level 4 with a focus on developing and enhancing your theatre making, production and performance skills.
This module aims to:
Develop your understanding of a selected contemporary theatre practitioner or practitioners and the practices with which they are associated
Develop your understanding of a selected approach or approaches to interpreting texts, rehearsal and performance
Develop your’ understanding of the relationship between theory and practice.
2. Outline syllabus:
This module provides you with an opportunity to study the ideas and methodologies of a selected contemporary theatre practitioner or practitioners. The practitioner/practitioners chosen for study will be contextualised through reference to a particular theatrical tradition, style, form or approach. The exact content of the module will vary year on year but may typically include a focus on contemporary directors such as Katie Mitchell, Rupert Gould, Mike Alfreds, and companies such as Kneehigh, Complicite, Frantic Assembly,
Typically, you will also be required to collaborate on researching and analysing ideas associated with concepts such as structure, narrative, experimentation, adaptation and/or staging new writing
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module draws on lectures, seminars, workshops, project work and visiting professionals, peer collaborative study.
Lectures will provide a theoretical and contextual underpinning for the practical work undertaken
Seminars and workshops will involve tutor led practical sessions on a range of topics.
Visiting professionals will offer either lectures or practical sessions and provide students with an opportunity to directly interact with theatre makers in the region.
Peer collaborative study. At the beginning of the module you will be placed into theatre companies, in which you will remain throughout the semester and be expected to work professionally and collaboratively both inside and outside the classroom. You will be expected to undertake critical readings, participate in group performances and contribute to group discussions.
