1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module is concerned with explorations into the self as a conscious site for performance making. In an age defined by an interest in visual self-representation it asks you to consider solo performance as a form of self-portraiture. Through exploring the transformation of ideas and the representation of experiences you will investigate ways artists might imagine and present themselves (from the personal/psychological, to the controversial/political). . The module builds on the creative skills acquired at Level 4 and requires you to develop versatility in order to apply these skills in a range of new theatrical contexts. In addition, the module is preparing you for the independent learning that is required at Level 6.
2. Outline syllabus:
This module will allow you to explore a range of approaches that can be used to translate ideas into theatrical forms. You will explore and engage with the intellectual processes of creative practices in your own work and the work of others (e.g. Pina Bausch, Akram Khan, Shen Wei, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Lloyd Newson, Jasmin Vardimon). A lecture series will introduce you to ideas relating to concepts of identity (gender, race, class) and how this might form the basis for creative exploration of the self. Working both individually and alongside other students you will construct creative material that uses personal experience, objects and/ or written/verbal texts as a starting point for investigation. The development of your improvisational skills will be a key element of this module.
Self-reflective practice and using peer and tutor feedback will also play a valuable role in helping you to develop a critical and creative mindset. This will encourage you to continue to identify your individual strengths and plan how you will address areas for personal development. In addition, you will consider some of the ethical issues that need to be considered when using personal experiences within a performative context.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Practical classes are delivered by the module leader and visiting professional artists. The practical sessions are designed to encourage creative experimentation, self reflection and personal discovery. Sessions will combine theory and practice and will encourage you to explore and articulate key concepts and theories. Regular class discussions will encourage you to reflect on your own work and receive feedback on your progress.
You will be expected, as part of directed learning, to take part in a range of activities, such as rehearsing, performing and viewings. You will be expected to actively utilise the resource list in the module handbook and to contribute to discussions related to the recommended readings. You will be required to view live performances in order to widen your knowledge and understanding of creative dance practices. Guidance for the development of research and writing skills will be given during the sessions.
The dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva Ultra will form the basis of the teaching and rehearsing spaces for this module. Theoretical and practical work is supported by the university library, digital video resources, and the knowledge and experience of tutors and the student cohort.
