1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module provides an immersive creative environment in which to develop your performance making abilities. Working alongside a professional dance artist, the focus of this module will be on developing your understanding of the role of the performer within the creation of contemporary dance work. In addition to utilising the skills gained from Performance Project 1, you will be responsible for the generation, development and presentation of original dance material. Alongside your practical studies, you will develop your understanding through research, analysis and reflection, in order to consider and articulate a range of issues and ideas related to performance making.
2. Outline syllabus:
You will undertake a series of practical investigations designed to challenge you as a creative dance artist. Building on these enquiries, you will be expected to work individually and collaboratively with your peers and an associated professional artist to create and present substantial performance work for a live audience that engages a range of integrated creative elements. This approach is designed to expose you to some of the complex demands that you will experience in the professional dance arena.
The module will encourage you to research into, and engage with, the performance making processes of a number of professional practitioners through critique and analysis. This research will inform areas of your presentation assessment. You will also be required to use reflective practices in order to develop discussion around how the generation, development and rehearsal of dance practice occurs. These theoretical considerations will be explored through a presentation assessment.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The course is taught through practical workshops, rehearsals and an intensive performance project. Sessions will vary in content but there will commonly be an emphasis on the interplay between theory and practice. Further developing the skills gained from Performance Project 1, you will focus on learning repertory and will explore a variety of methods for creating performance work. There will be required and recommended readings and an expectation for you to engage in self- directed research, practical rehearsals and peer critique. This module is resourced by studio spaces, the BSU Library, site-specific spaces (on and off campus) as appropriate, and the virtual learning and communication spaces of Minerva Ultra.
