1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module is concerned with exploring the relationships between creative thinking, choreography and the world around us. It requires you to develop an understanding of how dance can be used as a way to process and communicate ideas about a range of social, cultural and political experiences. You will be encouraged to produce new work for live performance and to critically examine your own work, the work of your peers and the work of professional artists. The module builds on the skills acquired in Dance Making 1 and 2 and will help you develop a sophisticated understanding of the relationship between the creation, presentation and reception of work.
2. Outline syllabus:
Practical classes are delivered by the module leader and visiting professional artists. They are designed to encourage a climate of experimentation, interrogation and discovery. The first part of the module will introduce you to some key ideas relating to creative ideas, processes and products. A series of lectures will engage you in some debates that will develop your understanding of dance as a cultural, social and political phenomenon (e.g. arts as activism, cultural representation, power relationships). In the studio you will consider how creative thinking can enable you to engage with, and respond to, some of these key ideas. In the second part of the module you will apply what you have learnt by designing, conducting and presenting a new dance work for live performance.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module is taught through a series of weekly practical classes that will incorporate practice and theory. In the studio you will work alongside your peers to participate in practical workshops that will give you an opportunity to experiment with new creative processes. Regular class discussions will encourage you to explore and articulate key concepts and theories.
You will be expected, as part of self-directed learning, to take part in a range of activities, such as rehearsing and participating in theatre visits. You will actively utilise the reference list in the module handbook for your individual research and contribute to discussions related to the recommended readings. You will be required to attend live performances in order to widen your knowledge and understanding of the professional arena.
The dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva Ultra form the basis of the teaching and learning spaces for this module. Guidance for the development of research and writing skills will be given during the sessions and through individual tutorials.
