1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module will introduce you to graphic novels and comics and their significance in international popular literary culture. You will learn how to develop sequential stories using, for example, storyboarding, characterisation and dialogue; you will also learn about the alternative production techniques used by makers in this genre.
You will have the opportunity to experiment with this versatile storytelling format and to consider diverse audiences along with the interaction of text and images. You will be supported to develop your own original creative project.

Introduction to graphic novel and comics
Sequential narrative and structure
Plot outline and setting
Characterisation and dialogue
Storyboarding and panel layout
Production and design approaches
Thinking about images: illustration and image sourcing
Thinking about audience
Publication: online and print
3. Teaching and learning activities:
There will be a mix of activities including weekly workshops, practical exercises and regular talks to develop your knowledge of this exciting area and also to inform your developing personal projects. Tutors can advise about approaches to publication, both in print and online.
