1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module covers the history and development of policing in the UK, critically examining theories and debates in policing, crime control and prevention. You will study British police services and other agencies involved in the functions of policing and consider their history, development, organisation and roles in the control of crime. The police as a frontline agency will be examined in the context of key issues such as police authority, accountability and governance, police-community relations, plural policing, and police reform and you will consider their impact on operational policing. You will also study the investigation of crime, including crime scenes, police searches, case management and charging. This will be located within a broader context of current theories, policy and practice on crime prevention, public safety and social order.

Politics and policies of policing
Police powers
Public order policing
Crime scene management
Types of evidence
Crime mapping and crime profiling
Suspect and witness management
Police interviewing
Policing marginalised communities
Police ethics
Techniques of crime prevention
Community safety strategies and partnerships
Transnational policing
3. Teaching and learning activities:
This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Lectures will provide an overview of each topic. Seminars will then examine these in a more focused and detailed manner and will be based on prepared readings as directed by module tutors. Workshops will focus on practical techniques and skills associated with the investigation and prevention of crime.
