1. Brief description and aims of module:

Creative Composition builds upon the relevant Level 4 modules and aims to further develop your skills as a composer and/or songwriter by helping you continue to contextualise your own work within current compositional thought and cultural practice. This will be achieved by working on a project - negotiated with your tutors - comprising four newly written pieces of music and/or songs. In addition, the module affords you the opportunity to cultivate and hone your personal artistic identity as a songwriter/composer.

2.Outline syllabus

Your project might include exploration of compositional aesthetics or techniques, composing either independently or in a collaborative or interdisciplinary context,. Through this work you will continue to develop the scope of your compositional practice and experiment further with your personal voice as a composer/songwriter. You will refine your production skills and further develop your understanding of compositional techniques through the study of contemporary repertoire and the practical application of these skills.

3.Teaching and learning activities

Seminars and/or one to one tutorials are designed to support the technical, aesthetic and contextual understanding of the work you are making. Within these sessions, existing work relevant to your practice will be presented, and you will be invited to consider any practical challenges, and then explore the skills needed to address them.

Your work will continue to be supported by individual and/or small group tutorials where you will work on your pieces with tutor and peer support. Indeed, regular meetings of students is encouraged in order to share insights regarding development of compositional and recording skills. By completion of this module, your pieces / songs will need to be recorded to release standard.
