Module: CCO5003-20 - Computer 3D Modelling and Visualisation
Level: 5
Credit Value: 20
Module Tutor: Tim Webb

1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module builds upon your creative and technical skills developed at level 4. As the first animation pathway module you’ll take you learn 3D modelling and building techniques, which form a basis of many computing visual outputs, such as computer games or interactive experiences. You’ll research designing and modelling in 3D graphics and its history, and analyse how a 3D scene is created.
You will learn industry standard 3D modelling software as well as becoming aware of other software solutions and develop hand-drawn ideas into rendered 3D graphics.
You will learn how to the use a virtual camera for simulation and create a virtual fly-through of an environment designed by you, informed by your research.
2. Outline syllabus:
3D modelling software workshops.
Polygonal modelling techniques
Sculpting principles
Scene building
Environments
Using a virtual camera
Basic lighting
History of 3D graphics
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Class Hours
A majority of the class time will be spent in developing a range of technical skills in 3D modelling. As your project proposal develops you will be supported by individual formative feedback tutorials from your lecturer. Additionally, there will be critical debate and discussion with your lecturer and fellow students. These opportunities will help develop your analytical research skills. You will develop strategies to overcome technical problems that occur within this subject.
Independent Learning
In your independent learning time, you will be expected to continue developing your knowledge of 3D modelling. This will include spending a considerable time practicing techniques and dealing with technical problems that may arise. You will further your research instigated in the class, and develop an integrated approach to research and development.
