1. Brief description and aims of module:

This self-directed module is designed to develop your practical and critical skills through mixed media textiles studio practice.

Through investigative research into methods and materials, you will develop your ability to risk take and critically evaluate your experimental textiles work and practice.

Contextualisation of your work will be supported to enable you to develop a mixed media textiles subject relevant language to record, communicate and evaluate your ideas effectively in a professional manner.

2.Outline syllabus

At the beginning of this mixed media textiles module you will be introduced to a range of themes that will encourage you to explore your areas of interest. From these themes you will be expected to write a self-directed study proposal.

This document will identify your proposed area of practical mixed media textiles studio practice and research and should be around 500 words in length.

The proposal will be discussed with tutors and a plan of study and research agreed.

You will then be expected to work independently within your chosen area of practice, supported by lectures, seminars, group critiques, specialist mixed media textiles workshops and individual tutorials.

A series of field of art lectures by visiting artists from a variety of disciplines will support your growing knowledge of the range of materials, methods and ideas that relate to the establishment of a professional ethical and sustainable practice, and the presentation of artworks to an audience.

Course specific and school wide workshops and talks by staff and professionals from the university’s careers department will support your professional development and planning.

You will present your mixed media textiles work in your studio space at the end of the module along with your investigative, experimental and supporting work, and a reflective journal containing a critical self-evaluation.

Your submission for this module should demonstrate 200 hours of study.

Throughout the module staff will make you aware of opportunities to apply for external competitions, offsite exhibitions, group projects, public artworks and external workshops, that will help develop your practice, professionalism and career opportunities. Should you undertake one of these opportunities, you should inform your tutors and submit any discipline relevant research and work made for the project as part of your assessment.
