1. Brief description and aims of module:
This self-directed module is designed to develop your practical and critical skills through your chosen area of graphic arts studio practice.
Areas of graphic arts studio practice in which you might work or combine include: typography, illustration, digital media and book arts.
Through investigative research into processes and materials, you will develop your ability to risk take and critically evaluate your experimental design work and practice.
Contextualisation of your work will be supported to enable you to develop a subject relevant language to record, communicate and evaluate your ideas effectively in a professional manner.
2.Outline syllabus
At the beginning of this graphic arts module you will be expected to write a self-directed study proposal based on a brief set by your tutor.
This document will identify your area of graphic arts practice and research and should be around 500 words in length.
The proposal will be discussed with tutors and a plan of study and research agreed.
You will then be expected to work independently within your chosen area of practice, supported by lectures, seminars, group critiques, specialist graphic arts workshops and individual tutorials.
A series of field of art lectures by visiting artists from a variety of disciplines will support your growing knowledge of the range of materials, methods and ideas that relate to the establishment of a professional ethical design practice, and the publication or presentation of work to an audience.
Course specific and school wide workshops and talks by staff and professionals from the university’s careers department will support your professional development and planning.
You will present your graphic arts work in your studio space at the end of the module along with your investigative, experimental and supporting work, and a reflective journal containing a critical self-evaluation.
Your submission for this module should demonstrate 200 hours of study.
