1. Brief description and aims of module:
Biotechnology is a broad subject, which includes any technology that utilizes biological systems, living organisms or parts of them, to develop or create different products, to understand processes, and to use them to address problems in wider society. A number of these processes use microbial systems, for example, brewing and baking. Such traditional processes often use the living organisms in their natural form, while more modern biotechnology frequently involves more advanced modification of the biological system or organism. This module aims to introduce some of the key areas within biotechnology, and will use model organisms to highlight how these technologies can be adapted for use in different fields.
2. Outline syllabus
This module will cover some of both the traditional and new biotechnologies, including basic cloning techniques, transformation in plants and bacteria, protein technology, biopesticides and waste treatment, as well as cutting edge gene editing technologies. By taking this module, you will also become aware of some related commercial processes through study of antibiotic production, large-scale manufacture of enzymes and brewing. The manipulation and exploitation of enzyme activities will also be a focus.
3. Teaching and learning activities
Sessions will include a mixture of lectures, laboratory based practicals and workshops. Generally, the lectures will introduce the topics and the lab sessions will expand on them and give practical experience in a range of skills.
