SWOC ANALYSIS
STRENGTH:
The Department sticks to the regime of taking the students to visit places of botanical interests at par with the syllabus.
Students are encouraged to participate in the excursion programs and more than 80% of them do so.
Phytogeographically different locations are visited every time so that the students can be made aware of the different types of prevalent vegetations. This helps them to practically gain knowledge of different ecological systems.
Gaining knowledge about plant diversities, medicinal uses of plants and other ethnobotanical uses of plants, is inevitable when the students visit various places of botanical interests.
A strong teacher-student bonding or feeling of closeness gains enhancement owing to excursional trips.
WEAKNESS:
During social and national crises, such as the pandemic, conduction of excursions come to an absolute halt. During this period students have to access their knowledge based on theoretical information.
Distant phytogeographically different places cannot be visited owing to high expenses of the tours (affordability of the students).
100% participation by students of the department is not possible due to various personal problems faced by them such as, financial, domestic, health, etc. Also, parents of some students are reluctant to send their female wards to study tours fearing risks and insecurity. Some parents are even superstitious about study tours and are unwilling to keep their wards out of sight for longer periods of time.
OPPORTUNITIES:
Funding assistance from the college can help the financially weak students to participate.
The department can collaborate with tour managers on annual basis for excursions so that they become cost-effective and affordable.
CHALLENGES:
Maintaining equality among the students for their 100% participation in excursion programs. By doing so, no student will feel left out and academically backward students will show interest in the subject.
The above point is possible only when teachers or mentors dive into knowing the problems faced by students. Many a times students are hesitant to confide in their personal difficulties. This can be overcome by perseveringly handling the situation.
The topography of Basirhat as well as its accessibility of conveyance and remoteness from the city becomes a hindrance to travel.
