PLEx is a Personalized Learning Experience. As a district dedicated to fostering a culture of forward-thinking, innovative and life-long opportunities, it is our responsibility to meet the needs of all learners. PLEx is a customized approach to learning where students have the choice of different learning modalities that best meet their academic needs. Students will utilize the components of our Portrait of the Graduate in their acquisition of skills related to preparedness, responsibility, resilience and engagement. Students will participate in a personalized learning experience that provides them the agency of choice in customizing their learning.
What does a normal day of PLEx look like?
PLEx is designed to offer students more independence than a traditional classroom in their access to coursework, assessment of coursework while in a flexible classroom setting.
In lieu of reporting to a regularly assigned classroom for a chosen PLEx subject, students will report to the PLEx classroom (LGI).
They will remain in the LGI for the entirety of the period and will complete assigned work based on their choice of modality.
The regular education teacher for the selected course is assigned to the PLEx classroom for the period as well. This ensures students still have access to and support from the teacher of the course.
Each week, students will receive the work they need to accomplish. They’ll have the freedom within PLEX to structure their day accordingly.
Assessments can be traditional or developed through a project-based learning experience created by the teacher.
Student progress will be communicated as it normally has been.
How does PLEx work?
Students enrolled in a PLEx course will still operate on our normal bell schedule. However, they will report to the PLEx classroom (LGI) for their specific PLEx course(s). The courses selected for PLEx will offer students a flexible learning experience that can be adjusted daily based on student need or interest. The learning pathway that a student chooses will be tailored to their specific needs. Staff have developed interactive google classrooms that are tailored for the PLEx experience and will use project-based learning assessments. The teacher creates all of the curriculum and digitizes it for their students to access. All students will be given access to district approved curriculum regardless of the learning modality they choose. The students will engage in a deep, authentic learning experience designed for exploration and collaboration. Students will have more flexibility within the curriculum by engaging in interdisciplinary learning and by incorporating personal and career interests. PLEX provides personalized instruction and support based on each student’s need. Students in PLEx are engaged with the curriculum at their own pace by creating a customized daily schedule. Students are empowered to advocate for themselves by seeking teacher and student support.
Who can participate in a PLEx class?
Only students who are in good standing within their academics, behavior and attendance and have requested one of the courses below may enroll in the PLEx course. The PLEx courses are designed for students who can demonstrate the intrinsic motivation to work independently and set personal deadlines for the successful completion of assigned work. Students who demonstrate an ability to maintain an 80% or higher in their course and maintain expected behavior and attendance will be permitted to stay in the PLEx course. If a student fails to meet these expectations, they will have a meeting with their counselor and ultimately be reassigned to the traditional course.
This program includes independent courses that utilize a personalized learning framework where students are expected to work independently or in small groups to complete posted weekly assignments. These courses are designed around college-level experiences.
