Mrs. Markert
7th Grade ELA
March means that we will be starting our text-dependent analysis (TDA) unit. This unit focuses on several aspects of TDA responses. We discuss why learning to write a well-reasoned, well-constructed TDA response is important, in school and in the real-world. Students learn the 9 key components of a well-written TDA response. We discuss the common characteristics of all TDA prompts, and students practice deconstructing those prompts so that they have their best advantage at understanding what they are to analyze, regardless of the prompts they are given. The students will have the opportunity to view and “grade” student-written TDA responses before, finally, writing their own TDA responses.

7th Grade Science
In science class we recently wrapped up our traits and reproduction unit with an activity called build a trout (see the image below). Students practiced with heredity and probability as well as the genes, to proteins, to traits sequence, as they made their trout offspring. We observed the variation among all our trout, each made from the same two parents, to solidify our understanding of genetic variation created through sexual reproduction. We are now a few weeks into our populations and resources unit with a focus on a glacial ecosystem and a mysterious sudden rise in jellyfish numbers. Coming up, we have a guest speaker from Penn State coming to visit and teach a lesson on populations and their interactions. Additionally, our trout are no longer in the egg stage, we continue to take care of them, and watch them grow!
Does this graph show a proportional relationship?
7th Grade Math
Students will soon complete their mid-topic math assessment on ratios, rates, unit rates, and how to navigate proportional relationships. The unit will then move into recognizing proportional relationships in graphical form. This is an extension of the first part of our unit where students examined proportional relationships with tables, word problems, and began the transition to solving equations. Students consistently show their math work using labels to assist them along the way. I appreciate the students' continued tenacity to ask questions and clarify concepts throughout this unit.
7th Grade Social Studies
In Social Studies, Mr. Smacher (PSU - Student Teacher) has taken over the teaching of all classes. Collaborating with Mr.Clark, Mr. Smacher is currently leading the class through an exciting journey through the ancient civilizations of Central and South America.
In our exciting journey through history and culture, we've been diving deep into the worlds of the Olmec, Aztecs, and Mayans. From their awe-inspiring pyramids to their intricate artwork, we've explored the rich history of their civilizations. Our studies haven't just focused on the monumental achievements of these ancient peoples but have delved into their everyday lives, customs, and beliefs. Understanding their governments, from the powerful rulers to the intricate systems of governance, has opened our eyes to the complexities of ancient societies.
Our classroom has been buzzing with enthusiasm as students work diligently, answering questions, and engaging in thought-provoking discussions. Through critical thinking and analysis, we’re unraveling the mysteries of the past, piecing together the puzzle of these remarkable civilizations. From exploring hieroglyphs to examining archaeological evidence, students have been actively contributing to our collective understanding. As we continue our exploration, we look forward to uncovering even more fascinating insights into the history and legacy of the Olmec, Aztecs, and Mayans.
