In Miss Hojnacki’s math class, we are still working through Unit 2 called “Analyze and Use Proportional Relationships”. Students have been learning about ratio and rate concepts and how to recognize proportional relationships. In math, there is a lot of room for variations on how students can solve problems. Students were introduced to three different methods on how to determine if ratios have a proportional relationship. This allows students to have a choice in which way they like to solve the problems based on their comfort level. By the end of this unit, students will be able to represent proportional relationships and graph proportional quantities on a coordinate plane.

In February, we continued our focus on TDA writing. Students finished their mid-year TDA essay using the text “Two Gifts”. Students received individualized feedback on their writing and will continue to use this feedback to improve their TDA writing. We will continue to focus on finding and using the best text evidence to support the analysis as well as providing a thorough analysis of the evidence. In the next few weeks, our TDA writing unit will culminate with a final TDA writing prompt in preparation for the PSSAs in late April.

We have been working on our Ecology Unit. Students are learning about all of the factors that create ecosystems around the world. They spent a few days learning about a specific biome and creating a poster to display all of the information. They had to include both biotic (living organisms) and abiotic factors (non-living features) as well as a food chain and threats to that biome. I’ve shared some of the awesome student work!
In Western World Geography, our students have been learning about many civilizations. However, during the month of March, they are making their own. Students will use the location and characteristics of existing countries in Central or South America as the basis of their project. By focusing on the geographic, economic, social, government features of actual countries, students will learn the fundamentals of civilizations.
